Wildout's D-Series Motor Rebuild
#44
Yeah the stock motor. I'm not boosting it until the end of the year (September). It just a "when I get bored" type of project so it could be done before then, but all my money right now is going into getting something else :GrinDev:
Battle of what, who's gonna be done first? I think we know who wins that.
I'll even help you build your motor :finger:

But definatly great job with yours and yours is defiantly getting alot more man hours in the motor then mine will.

Engine will be coming home this week from the machine shop all cleaned up and ready for me to begin the re-assembly. Will take pics once it's home.
Right now the block is done, the head is done and the valves are done. Just waiting on the crank to come back from micropolishing; then the rod's being checked for bore alignment and having the arp rod bolts installed.

So the motor is mostly done, only little stuff have to be added on. Brackets and such.
Onto the pics
All cleaned up from the machine shop
Two monkey's working on the block
The third monkey working on the head
No more talking, just engine built pics
Monkey 3 Finishes the head, before the 1 & 2 monkey
Block ready for the pistons

Lots of respect go out to Bryan and Fuzzy for lending a hand in helping me put together this motor. Without Fuzzy's help in putting together the head, I would have spent another 2-3 hours alone on it. Thanks to Bryan I didn't go crazy plastigaging all the bearings with the girdle in the way, causing so many issues trying to torque down the rod bolts.
In all we started at 11pm on Friday and finished at 4am Saturday. Cheapest build I've done yet.
$470 for machine work
$120 for rod and main bearings
$75 for ARP rod bolts
$40 for all the gasket's in the head and a FREE timing belt
Install into the car will probably happen next weekend and I will update the thread then with more pics.

Yeah pretty much. Got carried away, as usual, because you want to replace everything, even though it's not needed. Anyways did a valvejob on the head and valves and got arp rod bolts so if in the future I decided to rev it to 9000rpm, the bottom end will hold up. That would of saved $160
Anyways added the prices above

i hate you trenell. i wish my motor was that cheap and i wish that my valve springs went in as easy as yours too. it was actually pretty fun to put that head together.

Okay, so I've been extremely busy with work, car ---- and just trying to catch up on things in general, but the engine has been in the car for the last 2 weeks. Oh and here's the kicker, it's not in my car! Yup that's right, the motor Me, Bryan and Fuzzy built has been put into "Putt, Putt"
Anyways here are some of the pics.
The three monkey's have begun the work
The process
"Yo Guy!, What are you doing over there?".....
"Let me see"...
"Let me do it"..
"How do you do that with your hair?...
Random Sparks....
Ready to come on out
Toque is mandatory
Almost there
The bitch is out
Bryan - "Not bad for 1 year old spark plugs"
Trenell & Fuzzy "You didn't buy new spark plugs!"
Installing those old spark plugs into the new engine
All spark plugs in
Putting on random sensors, brackets and other crap
Shiny new timing belt tensioner
Year old clutch disk and pressure plate
Pretty much done, just missing the valve cover and timing belt cover
That's it for now, I forgot my camera the second day, which was the install day, so I'll take pics of the motor in the engine bay this weekend.
Overall things went pretty well, we mixed up the valvesprings intake and exhaust, but got that fixed.
I would like to thank Bryan (engsr) and Jason (FuzzyLSBro) for there hard work and time put into this motor, they're was a lot of cussing, swearing, tools lost and found, some still missing, a lot jokes and experience gain from these two days.
Bryan and Fuzzy can add anything I missed. Bryan would have to update this thread with the overall impression of the motor, since he's the one that gets to drive it daily.

^ Trenell, I said that because you mentioned it in an earlier post.
Great job by the way on the engine build up.

Compression test from a few weeks ago showed 210, 210, 190, and 185. Normal compression is around 170-175, I believe, so the motor is still breaking in. For what it's worth, I did the second oil change today - about 5000km after installation and the first oil change (after about a week of driving - 300km or so). No surprises in either change - ie. no shavings or anything. Still burns some oil here and there but that's because I drive the car harder on occasion.
It's good to know that the motor sounds good and runs really strong. I have zero worries about falling apart or blowing up, which I couldn't say about the old motor. And some know of the shenanegans of the old motor ...
Again thanks to Fuzzy and Trenell (especially) for getting me out of a serious jam - couldn't have done it without your help.

No problem Bry. I hook up BRO'S.....BRO!
Oh yeah btw the compression test was 210, 210, 210, 200,
Your numbers are just a touch off...
Max accordding to the helms manual is 180 - 185 from my memory, so its still breaking in.
You still need to wash it and clean it
