hey you guys i have a problem.. i want vtec. im rocking a B18b dohc. and some guy across the street told me that i can put a b16 vtec head on it. and its pretty quick. now im not to sure if i should believe him because he drives a jetta =D but yeah can some one help me with that i kinda wanna do that up next payday.

Yes you can, thats what the ls/vtes is. My last civic engine was a b18b bottom end with a b16a2 head, it took my about 5 hours to swap the head, but it was my first time doing it, plus i was taking my sweet as time doing it. But yes you can do it with a little bit of work. You just need to buy GSR head gasket, water pump, and timing belt.

give you an idea of cost of some parts:

vtec head: 300+
tap the block and drill holes for oil lines: not sure
waterpump, timing belt, tensioner: 200$ more or less
and other stuff thats needed. so it adds up..
going ls/vtec can get pricey.

all adds up if u want to go the cheaper route grab a b16 motor which you can find on forums going anywhere between 500-1000$ and swap it in.

^^^^^^ agreed, there are countless threads, forums, whole sites dedicated to this ---- look it up, google is your friend

 

all you need is the Golden Eagle LSvtec conversion kit with the ARP head studs and a vtec ecu (or if yours is already obd1, just have it chipped/modded for vtec). It comes with everything you need to do this swap in your garage, no machine shop necessary. I would however still get the head resurfaced at a machine shop.

The GSR water pump/timing belt is completely optional as you can use the LS water pump and timing belt.

 

nice i found some dude selling a golden eagle conversion kit in the states for $225... now all i need is a v-tec head and im on my way to more speed.

i noticed there's no mention of forged rods, some high compression pistons (JDM p30 b16a pistons fit ls rods), and tuning.

you probably also need a machine shop to machine the head, and assemble (pistons and rods) and balance rotating assembly. then some labour to install the head alongside timing belt, water pump, tensioner and tensioner spring.

so you'll also need coolant (since you replaced the water pump), oil, and an oil filter.

You don't NEED to fully build an engine when doing a lsvtec conversion. I mean ya, putting a stock vtec head on a stock LS block isn't gunna make 200whp, but it'll be an increase over the LS engine. You can expect around 140-160whp from slapping a vtec head on a LS block.

Now, if you're gunna do the b16 pistons, you might as well do the ARP rod bolts and balance everything. This will allow you to run larger cams since you'll have higher compression. I've tuned mild compression LSvtecs that make 200whp, but they also had upgraded valvetrain, aftermarket camshafts, all the bolt-ons and a free flowing exhaust.

Do you wanna spend $1500 or $4500? Thats the difference between just slapping a vtec head on a LS block and totally building your LS block up with different pistons, new bearings, vtec oil/water pump and machine work (if you're gunna buy new pistons, buy 81.50mm and bore it out 0.5mm so you start with 100% true/fresh cylinder walls).

TDI's are ok (mileage wise... lol) Your VW boy knows so much about vtec cuz he's been asking honda owners what's under the hood after he lost the race...

No offence, but if you dont know much about LSV don't bother buildin a full engine, u'll probably crash the car on the ride home from the shop or end up in a ditch without LSD..
