Default Gsr or Ls For Boost?

Does anyone know if there are any significant benefits to using a v-tec motor for a boost build up? I’m debating using my existing Gsr motor to build or an Ls... If the gains aren’t really significant it doesn’t really seem worth while wasting an expensive engine that I could sell or swap into my civic shell...

Input would help a guy out huge.... I’m a bit of a procrastinator

Thanks for your time!

James

It's arguable.

A B16 with the same turbo set up as a B18a1 will reach higher peak numbers at approximately 15% throughout the curve except the bottom end.

The B18 will give more performance at the base before the turbo can spool

A B18C1 vs. B18B will be pretty favourable throughout for the C1.

are we talking stock internals? the LS has lower compression so it's safer to boost on with basemap tuning (you should get it tuned anyway) however the main factor is that the GSR head flows alot better than the LS.

Really the plan is for a full build up.. bottom and top, I was just curious if V-tec was really a big deal under boost conditions or if a built Ls head with port... polish would yeild similar results...

As far as bottom end LS bottom is the cheapest and if your building it would be the best option IMO. For the head definitely go with a VTEC head, an LS can be made to put down really good power turbo but at the same boost level the VTEC head will put out more power. It is mainly due to the head design and having dual cam profiles.

LS Sleeved bottom end with your GSR head would be my vote James, you already know this though:P

yea i mean you can boost an LS, then change nothing and just swap on a vtec head and make an extra 40-50hp. the main question is what's your HP goal james? mine is only 300 so that can be done with with a LS head so there's really no point in swapping for a vtec head. if you want big HP numbers, then yes, swap a vtec head onto the LS block or build the GSR.

Well I was always the kid who wanted the biggest and badest... I'll be aiming for 350-400hp.. considering an Aem computer with dual boost settings... I had thought of building an ls vtec I just don't know if I want to waste my engine that way...(splitting top from bottom end) that's my hold back.. I don't know if the $ lost not selling the engine would be worth 40-50 extra hp... I guess in the world of hp though.. its a rather large gain...

just boost the stock GSR engine, spend the money elsewhere, and have fun.

Only thing you shouldn't do is push like 15 psi, keep it at 9 psi tops.

Edit: Didn't see your post before I made mine. If you want huge numbers, build up the GSR, don't bother with an LS at all.

Definitely see what your saying man. Basically at any given psi with the same setup a vtec setup will make more power in 99% of setups. The LS is a great motor for boosting in stock form and can put down even more power with simple rod and piston upgrade. If your shooting for 350-400whp and money is a concern I would say sell your GSR motor if the compression and everything is good. Grab a cheap LS block and build it up, with the proper supporting mods you should see 400whp no problem.

check out this dyno from Evans Tuning, http://forums.evans-tuning.com/viewtopic.php?t=3084 . Also I would say go Neptune, Crome or Hondata over AEM as far as a features and price is concerned.

oh ya here is a stock block LS, http://forums.evans-tuning.com/viewtopic.php?t=1813

your other option would be tear down your GSR bottom end and throw in some forged rods and pistons with ARP head studs and have it tuned completely with proper EMS and you will be laughing.

if you have the LS motor free, then that leaves you with no downtime to build the block, you can make crazy power with a good tune on an LS block, and if you boosting stock, if you blow the LS motor, you can pick up another long block for $500. GSR longblocks go for 2G's+.
