Default Cutting the oil filter

So i'm getting ready to do my first oil change after my rebuild.
In the old day we use to take the pan off to look for shavings.
Now i'm told to cut the filter. But how do i cut it open without making shavings??

the oil plug should have a magnet on the end if you're gonna find shavings thats where you'll find them

use a pipe cutter to open the canister up, then an exacto knife to cut off the filter element.
