Hi guys,

I am new to all of this. My shocks absorb is toast after 11 years of wear and tear. So I am in the market for new shocks and springs (if needed) I was searching on Ebay and have found that a set of Konis are around $400 US and KYB are only $300. But another brand called Drop Zone comes with all 4 struts and 4 springs for only $240 US. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...ayphotohosting
I don't want too much of a drop but 1 inch or so is alright. and I don't want the car to bounch all over. Any suggestions on which brand to buy and which model? and should I replace the springs while I am at it or should I just replace the struts?

I've had KYBs in the past and have been happy with them. That said, Koni yellows seem to be the preferred shock upgrade for most people. Once you've tried adjustibility you'll be hooked.

 

ok I've just read a few articles on this, it seems like most people go with Koni Yellows.. what are the diffrence betweem yellow and red? also is it the struts that make produce the drop or the springs? whice spring would be good to go with yellows or KYB's if i only want a 1" drop?

 

oh another question.. are the KYB GR-2 any good? their a lot cheaper

 

Yellow is adjustable... Red isnt I believe.

KYB is the budget choice for many on this board, but dont stand up to the quality (build and ride) of the yellows. The yellows can take alot more punishment as well meaning you can drop your car a bit lower and they will with stand the stress alot better.

As for the drop, it is mainly the spring, or coilover set up that drops it. The struts keep the body motion under control. However, the yellows I believe have adjustable perches which allow it to be dropped a little more. Some of the Koni Yellow guys will have to explain this more...

 

Actually koni sports (yellows) are the only dampener that is warrantied when used with lower springs or coilover sleeves. Therefore if they leak/blow/damage for any reason they can be replaced under warranty NO questions asked as long as you have the receipt of purchase.

 

The Koni "red"s are rebound adjustable, however, you need to remove the shock from the assembly to adjust it.

The "yellow"s are a great shock - I would recommended them, highly.

 

ok I've made up my mind, I am going with KYB GR-2's for my shocks as they are cheaper and I want something closer to stock. But my choice in springs now are either H&R, Neuspeed, or Koni.. and if i change my springs do I need a chamber kit if I use these spring?

 

Camber kids are necessary depending on the drop.

Since you're working with springs, and the ones that you are looking at (HR and Neuepeed) all drop very close to 2 inches, yes I would recommend a kit.

What is by far more important is to get your car aligned right after you swap your suspension. Toe is by far a greater threat to tire wear than camber is.
