Next Firebird...2011

Remember when the retro mustang was just a concept...everyone was like that looks awful, they could have done this, or that...and there were others who liked it....Mustang sales are crazy..Ford sold 160,975 mustangs in 2005...and 166,530 in 2006. What company wouldn't want a piece of that pie...?
I think its great for the economy...I work in the auto industry...and it slow, cause of all the imports that Canada allows...it would be so much better if Canada can work out deals with other countries, so we can export, or produce import cars in Canada...The muscle car era is back, and I think its good for any car enthusiast. I think it’s fair to say, that the imports had some effect to get the muscle car back.
For some old' school guys...the retro theme take them back to their teenage days...I just hope that when we are all older...we will have some "retro themed" cars that we all like today...think about the return of the Integra Type R..In the year...2020.

^you can't compare that to the mustang, the mustang has been in production since the 60's, so i woulden't say that the new mustang is a retro back of the first model, more like the 07 model. when was the last time the firebird was in production? i dunno, i just think that they should leave the old skool as that, so that if you could get your hands on one, like a 60's chevy, superbird, nova, GT500etc etc it holds that much more presidence and is a REAL muscle car. real muscle cars = next to no electronics, a gas guzzling V8 with no emissions, big long *** bench seat, and a steering wheel as big as the equator.

When i mentioned the mustang i was refering to the latest mustang...and yes it is a retro design...
Secondley....the firebird was also produced since the 60's 67 was the first model to be exact...
The last production run of the firebird/trans am was i believe 2002.
Every domestic manufacturer is bringing back some sort of retroness...
Dodge...with the hemi motors, and the Challenger...
Ford with the mustang..
and GM with the Camaro/Firebird now...these cars won't hold the value the original ones hold...its a trend...to boose Domestic sales..

The big 3 companies will never get it. They're targeting to a small market. I work in the auto industry as well and I consistently keep seeing Fords, GM's Dodges always being traded in for something smaller. With the way gas prices are going the average person can't afford to drive a 5.4L F-150 or a 5.7 Hemi. Never mind those engine's in a truck based platform, they're putting the same engine's into cars now. I've seen more corvette's go up for sale than I can find type r's or g35's. It's sad really.
PS it still looks ugly, the mustang atleast had some type of style to it

^ Hopefully the actual version which Pontiac releases will look better then this...(I still like this version)
Trenell, what type of auto field do u work in?...just curious...I myself work in the Plastic Injection Moulding field..the company i work for are direct suppliers for Ford, and GM.
Its just good to see the car hopefullly coming back into production...the firebird has a good history...and is, and always be considered a classic.

I hope they get it right, they need to get it right. The only domestic car I'm like is the newer corvette's and mustang's based on looks only, but I would never buy one used.
As for one I'd own everyday.....none
Nissan has be stepping up a lot lately, they're whole line up is decent overall.

my srt8 and vette are actually pretty good when it comes to gas.......and the vette is actually better then my srt8.....
domestic sports cars will depreciate like crazy for the first 5-7 years and then they will begin to appreciate again.....just look in the auto trder and the zr1's....they were high 20's-low30's brand new and that is what they are selling for now, same as the firbirds and trans ams.....they are mostly all over 7gs and the early 90 cars..... most people who buy these cars has some kinda passion for them, not just anyone buys them as far as a new version of a old muscle car goes, when a new version is released the price of true muscle cars usually sky rocket.....when dodge re-released the hemi the older hemis soared in price, you cant find one for under 60gs and they go as high as $500,000.
I personally like this car and the camaro.....but thats just my opinion...this is just begining of the new horsepower war between the big 3....
the new "blue devil" corvette will be 650hp from the factory and the numbers are the same for the new viper......and then theres the new 500hp gt500...
I think this is exactly what the big 3 need to do and its working....this is the market they actually make money in......
Just my 2 cents......long live the V8

^the zr1 was msrped at a little under 60K USD in 1990.
but, it's not working for the big 3 as they are continously quarter after quarter annoucing losses and more cutbacks to production and layoffs.

i don't know what the hell the big 3 are doing in terms of marketing. they are designing and putting money into concepts that appeal to a target market of what? older mid-life crisis men who want to remember the old days? when what they need to be doing is making and producing cars ment for commuting and will conform to today's gas prices. and they wonder why they report losses year after year and why the import suppliers are getting all the sales? the majority of the market are basically two things: 1. cheap commuiter cars that are good on gas and 2. trucks for work.
#24
i think it looks pretty hawt.. i have to admit that they've put effort in the styling of the new retro look muscle cars. You can anticipate that the challenger will be a good seller. It already got great reviews and will continue to grow, especially young, innovative professionals.

for the guys, who are concerned about mileage in regards to big V8's...theres not really much difference. An example below: info taken from GMCanada.com, and Nissan.ca
2007 Nissan 350Z M6
City L/100 km 12.1
Hwy L/100 km 8.2
2007 Chevrolet Corvette 6.0L V8
City L/100 Km 13.2 (14.2 Z06 7.0L V8)
Hwy L/100 km 7.6 ( 8.2 Z06 7.0L V8)
not everyone is buyin a hybrid, or a versa, or a echo etc....people are still buying full size imports and sedans, and coupes..as well as domestics..different strokes for differents folks.

advertised gas mileage lie. If that were the case, I'd be getting 32mpg in the teg and 40mpg in the civic.
The biggest thing that isn't been reported is yes, the charger, challenger, magnum, 300 hemi sell when they first come out, but no one see's or want you to see when they comeback to the dealership as a trade in for another vehicle or comeback for warrenty repair work.
To me that's the biggest kick in the face a company can have, I've tried your car for a year and for whatever reason now, it sucks and is traded in. Rarely is it traded in for a higher end car.

Trenell,
Im sure the printed gas consumption is not that accurate, but definately can't be a total lie either...can you back up that statement with any proof?...V8's are not nessesarily that bad on gas...
oh and also, im sure that if you leave your car unmodded, drive it, and don't abuse it...you can get better milage on ur cars.
Somehow, this topic went from the car, to how gas prices are too high...i don't see how its an issue...regular gas is also expensive..there's not much you can do..u need it, and your gonna buy it.
At the end, you sacrifice the car u can drive, because of the gas price....so u save some cash by the end of the year...but you put that cash right back into ur car for some mods...this would apply to most of the people on this board, cause its a hobby...
I would rather spend a bit more in gas,and drive something i like rather then drive something which is "smaller" more "economical"...

I can back it up with personal proof. I keep every gas receipt from the last 3 years, but that's not the point I'm trying to make.
What I'm saying is the big 3 are making cars targeted towards a target market "car enthusiasts" then complain of low sales and laying off people especially at there plants. That, nothing more. I'm talking about facts of life now, not my personal opinion. I could care less about gas prices, I don't pay for it work does. I've put 20,000kms on my civic from december to now alone. I'm not saying that I hate domestic's, but in terms of the everyday person that commutes to work, a kia and hyundai make cheap, realible cars that have more than enough features to keep the average person happy. Hell even the Nissan versa comes with bluetooth built-in to the stereo.
If I could afford the initial price of the car, I'd easily trade in my teg for a 67 mustang and I wasn't born in that era. Jeff's stang was amazing too, but I believe he got rid of it because of the rising gas price.
If a family that owned a dodge carvan filled up once a week for $60 traded in the van for a nissan altima they would save $25 a week alnne in gas. That money could go towards lunch, paying for parking, beer etc or that same family would probably put it towards the childs tuition.
But back to the new camaro, it's still ugly. I'd take a 07 mustang over it any day.

I think it's coming back too, what it's missing though is the diners, drive in movies, clothing style etc
I think they should bring back the cosworth

actually the big 3 are selling the bigger cars more then thier lower end cars...look at how many 300C's you see on the road...or magnums...or Cadillac DeVilles, and STS...regardless of the price of gas...people will still buy these cars...Brand Loyalty is something certain domestic cars have, and will remain.
When u state, that Kia and Hyundai make cheap reliable cars for the average everyday person u are 100% correct...but do u really think these V8's are for that "average person"...these cars are intended for a certain market..you know that...
#34
Layoffs are happining because of alot of issues...low sales is just one small factor. The fact that Canada can't export cars into other countries is a big factor...considering how much we import.

Very true, I agree that it would help the big 3 being able to import they're cars overseas. Brand loyalty is huge, especially with the cadillac crowd. The one thing about the 300's, magnum's etc.....a lot of them are company vehicles or leased.
#35
^ yes i have noticed that about the dodge lineup....alot of the cars are used in the rental fleet, and the rest are company oriented...
hopefully The big 3, will smarten up...and sales will rise again...as for the firebird...i like it...but since its only a drawing...hopefully the actual model will look better!

even imports over the year have been increasing displacemt slowly.......there was once a time when all imports were 4 cylinders now theres a lot of v8's in imports...
my take on hybrid vehiles other then the prius.....on average u pay $10,000 more for a hybrid vehicle...
A person on average may save $25.00/week which is $100.00 per month or $1200/years.....they will have to drive that car for 8.33 years to start saving money....who keeps a car for 8.33 years? and thats not calculating the high cost of repair if something goes wrong, theres a lot of plumbing in these new hybrid vehices....
and then theres the prius....
$22,070 msrp usd and advertises 55mpg, and magazines who has tested the car says more like 40mpg
and the for example sakes a 300c hemi advertises 25mpg best tests show its more like 18-20mpg....
so if you drive 15,500 miles per year at 40mpg=387.5gallons x $2.20/g=$852.50
15,500 miles per year at 20mpg=755gallons x $2.20/g=$1705.00
$756.80 difference not bad, but its costs $430.00 for the battery that needs to be changed every 30-40k
