Personally, I think you need more range.. HDR is really hard to pull off.. so keep trying. I havent mastered it yet in the slightest..
What programs are you using?

None of those really look HDR. The idea is that almost everything should be exposed properly. Lots of shadow/dark areas that are just gone here.

if the camera was facing the exit of that tunnel then you would have gotten the proper setting for HDR. Remember the point is to make your blacks contrast your whites as much as possible so with the wide open light outside contrasting with the dark tunnel. Plus the bloom setting would have looked good in that scenario as well.

edit: The s2k pic with HDR and bloom looks good but still missing those deep blacks. Is there anyway you could tweak that setting around?

Round 2, 1st shots are really nice IMO. The bloomed versions not so much.

To get a nice HDR image dont you need to have 3 images? 1 over exposed, 1 thats proper exposure and 1 underexposed. Then just use Photomatix and it will do all the stitching. Check for an 'Auto-bracketing' feature in your camera, this will take 3 shots of this type when you press the shutter just once.

Depends on how good you want it to look.

I'm pretty sure your looking at medium format territory though.

Edit: did a little bit of homework on it and there are at least a couple people that have printed 36" x 40" pics from 6mp cameras.

Based on that I'd say that you should be able to get an acceptable print the size you are looking for from a 10+ mega pixel D-SLR.
