What is the working range of the stock map sensor?

I admit I know squat about this topic (turboing), but I didn't think the stock MAP would read that high a boost pressure...

the stock mapsensor max's out at about 11-12 psi.

nice numbers! i made the exact same torque but damn that vtec head gives HP! screw it i'm putting a vtec head on. nick's tuning is ftw.

*Technically* the stock map sensor should max out at 14.7psi (otherwise known as atmospheric pressure at sea level)...

But thats in optimal conditions, like being exactly at sea level, etc etc...

Too many variables, and with boost creep being a serious issue, most tuners will max it at about 11 or 12psi.

Btw, she's running a bit rich at 12.7 - 1 at WOT... Might see if we can lean her out just a tad (safely, of course).

And miraculously, i'm actually getting better fuel mileage out of her then before the boost/tune. I used to hit Vtec every time i drove, and got about 450km's to the tank... I now hit Vtec w/ BOOST and i'm getting about 480-500km's to the tank.

So my GSR-T is gonna be my fun summer car; future plans include a Skunk2 i/m, type R cams (maybe springs/valves to get some more rev's out of her), civic half rad w/ slim fan, gotta find myself a new boost controller, and i'm hoping to hit 400whp max once spring comes around.

Eventually, i'd like to see a Synapse turbo kit on her; GT30 ftmfw!

...Of course, this all comes after the circuit king i plan to build for spring time... toss up between stock type R, or EK w/ type R swap.

^WR3D, i've been getting wicked gas mileage since i got my car tuned, i get anywhere between 500-520km/tank of 94, and that's beating on the car, with 255lph/pump, 750cc injectors, aem fuel rail and regulator. not bad in my book!

Veryy nice; some bigg *** injectors, LOL!

Do u have a fuel pressure gauge on ur dash, or directly on ur fuel rail?

And at idle or low load, does ur engine like to backfire into the exhaust? Apparently my injector's spray patterns are alittle irratic under those conditions.

^the fuel pressure is off of the rail. but when i had my car tuned to idle at 750rpm, it would back fire due to the spray pattern of the RC's at low idle, but now the idle is set to 1000rpm and it holds it fine, no backfiring.

are you running a cat?

Nah, to be honest...

From the charts i've seen, cat's (newer ones, that is) make nearly no difference; your hp curve starts up a bit sooner, but still climbs relatively evenly...

I've seen a MAX gain of about 8hp... average is like 4 or 5 :S

Nick was telling me about a cat that Magnaflow manufactures; It's basically a resonator, but the inside is coated in catalysts u'd normally find in... well, a catalytic converter.

It allows for max flow; but at an idle and low load, it cleans the exhaust enough to keep ur setup on the low.

Handy at longgggg *** red lights... and cops obv :P

Nick stocks em for $250.

that better be installed with flanges and tig welded....you can get magnaflow universal high-flow cat off the shelf at canadian tire or parts source. last time i was there the 3" converter was around 89-99 bucks.

nice dyno numbers btw....get a new map sensor and crank up the boost

I've got a GM 3 Bar MAP, but i didn't bother; it's the end of the season... Just no point; i already spin the ---- out of my tires, lol...

And it's not a cat; its a resonator, with a catalyst coating. Basically, it's not nearly as restrictive, won't break up (at least not as quickly), and *seems* legal.

I think it's a worthy investment; whatever lets ur car be fly, and keeps the popo off ur ***.

EDIT: But i do agree with you; it is on the expensive side (no flanges )

^i know what your talking about, a friend of mine just got one put on his car, basically instead of a high flow cat that's 10inches long, the cat (inside) is only like 2inches long and the rest is just pipe.

i'm sitting on a 3bar map sensor too, going to use it next spring when i crank up the boost.

I'ma try to find an ITR tranny, and run a scramble boost controller... gonna look into that some more

Just tryin to figure out if it's worth starting grassroots boosted, or if i should just run a stock civic.

nice setup and nice numbers Bestodabest

I personally don't like running more than 10psi on a stock MAP sensor, unless they've got a solid boost controller, crazy ---- happens when you go over the 11.2psi the stock one can see and I don't trust manual boost controllers enough to run 11psi and hope for no creep/fluctuation over time.

What are you thinking for a boost controller bestodabest?
I'm using an AVCR and I like it, it has a scramble feature.

Fuzzy:
I've gone from a LS to a LSvtec before and you'll be impressed. We saw nearly 70whp more just from switching to a VTEC head (b16) and running 2psi LESS than before the vtec head. This was on a cheap ebay-style kit (about a $1600 kit) with a cast iron manifold, t3/t4 57 trim and only a 2.5" exhaust. Tuned on Neptune with Neptunes EBC it made 315whp @ 11psi and it only ever hit 11psi from 7000-7800rpms.

Neptune FTW in my opinion.

Yea, Nick was telling me about Neptune... It has a scramble boost capability, right? What other features does it come with?

I don't think Neptunes current EBC feature has a scramble feature (i'd have to double check my tuning laptop though). Neptune has many features that help us boosted guys. Such as, a true working anti-lag, ignition and fuel cuts (user selectable too), primary and secondary fuel and ignition maps (for n20 or a pump gas/race gas tune), it has 2 or 3 General Purpose Outputs. It has the EBC feature which can control boost by gear and boost by gear AND rpms (at the same time).

I personally don't feel there are ANY setups NOT worthwhile of Neptune. So what, you have to pay a $100USD license fee, thats a 1 time fee, so if you tune 5 times you pay that fee once. Whats $100 in the grand scheme of things?

Neptune is a lot more solid/reliable of a software IMO and the extra features available to the customers is worth the $100 USD alone. With Neptune, you can disable ALL ignition adjustments above a certain load value (lets just say, when you go into boost, so 2psi). So you can be damn sure there aren't any extra annoying things adjusting the timing on you without you knowing and that what timing value you running on the ignition map(s) is what you get for the actual timing value. To some, this may seem like a useless feature, but I find it quite valueable personally.

Then there are Neptunes advantages from a tuners standpoint. Tuning a car with Neptune is a very painless, quick process, with selectable datalogging perameters to help the tuner. Neptune also has the ability to view the datalogs on a graph, which makes for very quick precise tuning. Not to mention support that goes beyond some forum where you hope someone responds. I've called JR (the developer of Neptune) with a car on the dyno to help resolve an issue I was having, which he did right there on the phone with me.

I've never heard anyone say that switching to Neptune wasn't worth the money (from people who've actually switched over).

for real. i can basically slap on a vtec head and re-tune and make my 300hp goal. but now i'm in the mindset, if i'm going to do it, might aswell go all out and up boost while i'm at it. i decided to go with neptune for the boost by gear and the two step, chrome is ok, i just don't like the idea of dropping fuel for the two step, and i don't want an MSD ignition.

you've already got a nice turbo kit fuzzy, you'll prolly see even better results with the vtec head, my buddys car had a cheaper kit and smaller (2.5") exhaust.

BestodaBest:
I'm self employed and also do tuning for some shops in this area.

have you ever looked into the Bee*R Rev limmiter/ launch control. its bigger on turbo car generally. i would definately recommend it, got one last week. It doesn't reduce the fuel, but just cuts the ignition so u don't lean out while the launch control is active

neptune is a good choice. i use ectune now. it works really really really well for boost and has a ton of awesome features.

i have a b16 head sitting in my garage that i might be selling. it need work though so im now sure if you would be interested in it.

its complete with stock B16 cams. already been ported and modified for LS/VTEC. but it needs all 16 valve guides, seals, valve job, resurface, cleaning etc....
