wtf?! car won't start.

drove it last night, and parked it in my driveway fine. just now i went outside to start it up -- nothing.

it seems like its cranking, but it's not catching.. could it be the starter?

just want to know a definite answer so i can repair what ever it is. TIA.

96vtec 07-11-2005 03:49 PM

Check what reading are you getting off your battery. If its too weak, it wont be able turn the starter quick enough to start the car. If the battery has good juice, then it might be the starter. Bench test it and see if it works properly.

If you turn the key to the on position and have power, then turn it to start and everything goes off, maybe hear a click but nothing else, check ALL your grounds to make sure it isnt one of them before pulling out your starter. - take it from me, it was a pain in the arse.

96vtec 07-11-2005 03:50 PM

And access to a Helms manual helps as well...

HKJ 07-11-2005 04:05 PM

battery is fine, and im almost sure that all my grounds are fine as well, because nothing goes off when i turn the key.

my brother told me he smelled a lot of fuel when i tried cranking it again, so i ruled out a fuel pressure problem.. anything else?

96vtec 07-11-2005 04:07 PM

Does it actually crank, or just click?

HKJ 07-11-2005 04:16 PM

it cranks.. but it seems like its not catching.. hard to explain

WildoutWhiteGSR 07-11-2005 04:57 PM

can you hear the fuel pump turn on and off when you put it in the on position?

HKJ 07-11-2005 05:02 PM

yea.

Bob 07-11-2005 05:30 PM

spark

Check for spark, pull a plug wire and hold it close to a ground while someone turns over the engine....if you have spark you'll see it. Don't hurt yourself now :yeah: ....and If you're starter's pooched and you have a manual tranny you can bumb start it to at least get you somewhere if you need to move your car.

Platinum Playa 07-11-2005 05:43 PM

timing belt???

90teg 07-11-2005 07:10 PM

If your car is cranking it's prob not the starter's cuz if the starter was shot u wouldn't hear anything. what it sounds like to me is your distributor, you might need a new rotor cuz the old one is prob not connecting right. i;m not 100% sure thats the prob but it's some where to start. let me know how it goes. and it is also possible that it could be the timming belt like someone eles said

boost obsessed 07-12-2005 09:58 AM

It's funny, my friends R did the same thing last night, he pulled the wires and checked for spark, left no. 1 unplugged cranked it, it started and then a big puff of black smoke

DRT acura 07-12-2005 11:30 AM

I dought its the timing belt i would check my fuses first (ignition fuse) then jump start it for fun the extra charge may help.

If it was the timing belt you would hear a funny taping from the engine as the valves hit the pistions.

fuel pumps and timing problems like to happen while your driving so it can strand you (mostly but not allways)

i'd like to think it was the interer light left on over night or door not closed all the way

good luck :yeah:

probably the ignition coil, mine went 2 years ago, it is inside the distributor cap

Girlie_Integ 07-15-2005 01:40 PM

*roll eyes*

...its the ignition coil.
change the coil, get a new distributor cap.

95integra 07-15-2005 05:11 PM

Cap, Rotor, Distributer Coil Or Igniter Is Blown. 100$ For a new coil, 130$ for a new igniter. Take off the distributer and take it to a mechanic who knows what their doing. takes 5 minutes to get it done, then hook it back up to your car..but make sure you dont ---- up your timing. very important.

Before doing that though. Take off one spark plug wire. take it off the spark plug NOT the distributer. now stick an extension in there * make sure it conducts* touch it to something ground on your car. get someone to turn the ignition. No spark means your coil is gone. Dont keep turning the motor over n over..It'll mess up your entire distributer.

HKJ 07-15-2005 11:33 PM

thanks for all the help guys. it turned out the motor was flooded, it fired up after like 15 tries.

rey 07-16-2005 12:03 AM

it was probably your MFR connections failling because of the heat, causing you to flood it. Common with aging hondas.

how do you know for sure that it's the ignition coil? it could be anything along the ignition lines, and as he said, his motor was flooded so it turned out not to be the ignition coil. *roll eyes x2*

I was just trying to be stupid... :P

yazo 08-28-2005 02:05 AM

is the car starting normal or did it do it again? my guess is the ignitor in the distributor is slowly failing
