Default tranny won't go in gear? help.

hey guys,

my brother has a 94 integra LS, it has roughly 258km's on it. From what we know i don't think it has had a tranny fluid change since he got the car with 234km. But he tells me that sometimes when he tries to go in gear, it doesn't allow him to. Once he went in gear 1, trying to go 2,3 but it wouldn't let him in but gear 4 he could. Sometimes it grinds gears also. Let me know what you guys think this might be? maybe needs a tranny fluid change ? add some GM sychro mesh? let me know any help is appriciated.

T.I.A.

try changing the fluid first, fluid is cheap. i had that problem when my case was running low. when i changed it for the first time, after 100,000kms less than an oz of fluid was in the case, most of it was because my case was cracked (and i didn't know it- stupid pothole!!). anyway, even before that, it would be tough to get it in reverse (occassionally it would grind) or downshift into first. i haven't had a problem since then.

i'd try that first. there was a poll on ht and honda mtf came out on top, so you might want to get a few quarts of that and one of those flexible spout thingies. hopefully it's that and not the syncros. it's really easy to do, pull off the wheel and you should be able to drain and fill it within 15 minutes.

hmmmm....sounds just like how my clutch went. but if it has a stock clutch, then either the clutch/throwout bearing could be gone. but first try changing the fluid and if the problem continues then it could be the clutch.

I'd say it's the clutch or clutch master cylinder unless theres no fluid in the tranny.

^^
T. is right, it's a little more than 2, they're like 946 ml a piece or something.

2.2l (2.3 us qt, 1.9 imp qt) at oil change
2.3l (2.4 us qt, 2.0 imp qt) at overhaul.

clutch/master cylinder.

too many gears to be a synchro.

can he put it in gear when the engine is off?

look at the tach and speedometer when you drive. do they both go up at the same rate or does one lag behind?
