Default Subs not working well!

Hey Guys,

Yesterday I picked up a 12 Rockford Fosgate P3, and a prime 500 amp. My car has been already wired up by the previous owner. I put it in late last night, and it seemed fine. This morning when I went for a drive, I noticed that the base will kick, and then all of a sudden stop and then a few minutes later it would work. If I turned up the volume high, it seemed to be working , but at low volumes is when I want to hear some bass. I was doing some research and 4-Gauge wires are recommended. Currently I am running 8- Gauge wires. Can this possibly be the problem? I Double checked to make sure all the wires have been plugged in properly, and i noticed that the ground wire connected to the chassis, one of the tongues are broken. Will this damage the amp? I am buying a new wiring kit, i just wont be getting them for a few more days. Also the deck I have is an older pioneer deck, that skips once in a while. Is it possible the deck I am using is doing this, because when I was running a brand new pioneer deck, Alpine amp, and Mtx Jackhammers, I had no problems at all. Ended up returning that deck, amp and subs.

Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

my brother and i had a similar problem, it turned out it was a grounding issue. we just tried another place to ground it and it worked fine. my amp is grounded on the right side of the trunk through that huge bolt that holds the trunk panel in off to the side.

connectors might be ----? whoever installed did a hack job? ie-just winding the two wires together without using butt connectors and not taping it up

Normally the subs will cut out as you turn it up, that is normally because the amp power wire is to small, and you need a bigger one. when you turn it down your not going to hear bass unless you turn the gain on the amp on full, and keep the bass on the deck turned up. How much wattage and RMS is the amp you are running?

I'd say rip out all of the old wiring and start from scratch. You never know what someone else did and its more then likely a hack job.
Cheap wiring and poor ground are your first most obvious problems. Pick up a GOOD wiring kit. Or better yet, go to a car audio store and get the length you need cut. Might cost more but its your best choice. Replace your rca's as well and make sure you wire it up properly. If you dont know what your doing get it done by a professional.
Just my $.02

its a grounding issue.... and know it wont hurt your amp, the amp just shuts off. i had my ground come lose on my subs, and they just shut off. get new wire clamps, and drill a self tapping srew into your frame, and you a washer and tighten that ground up nice. make sure there is no pressure or pull on it. also, i dont know about you setup, but subs, like a car need to be "at running temp" so to speak to work well. my subs always dont sound as crisp on really cold mornings. you need to start off at low volumes, and warm the interior of the car up a bit and then you can start cranking it up. want to do a silly test? go to your car first thing in the morning and blast your subs right away, and you'll blow them so fast. do that at any other time, they will be perfectly fine.

Check to see if your amp is shutting off could be a faulty fuse or rcas or yourremote wire could be loose on the deck maybe so bad connection there I've installed alot of systems and thoes issues have came up when I deal with people that already had wires ran from someone else good luck
