Short Throw Shifter
anything in particular I should know before goin out at any special tools or anything?? does the old shifter just slide out??
|
I had a bitch of a time getting mine out the bolts where sezed.
Putting in the new one went easy exept. There was no clearince for the exhaust i had to bend it and remove the heat shelds. but it was realy worth all the work!! Good luck |
doesnt sound too dificult..i just dont want to start and then get halfway through and it not be able to go back in...then im stuck with a car with no shifter yah know
|
Just keep lube at hand and don't force the bolts. Lube it from under the car and from the top. If a bolt goes, it's nice having an extractor handy too.
What shape is your stock one in? If it's still good, I want it. I've been running a short shifter and hate it - though my shifter is stupid short. Finding gears at the track is tricky and because the shifter is longer under the car, the force on the shifter arms is increased. Since there's more force going into the tranny it's caused some damage to my tranny. I'm anxious to take it out and go back to stock. |

so you guys are saying its not good to install a short throw shifter into my car??? i have no intention to taking it to the track....maybe the drag strip once or tiwice to see how it runs....and my stock one needs a bushing i belive...thats about it...
RRRex what type of shifter do you have now??? |
Track driving and street driving have completely different effects on a car. I'm just saying you're not necessarily going to get the same results I get.
If you're aggressive with your shifting and put a lot of force on the shifter like I do, then that incrementally adds more force onto other parts and will damage your transmission. It's just something to keep in mind is all. I have a short shifter in 2 of my cars but the track -----'s shifter is a lot shorter than the other one. Not sure what make it is but hangs really low under the car. Just be aware of it is all and try not to slam it through the gears at the strip or though aggressive acceleration on the street. |
Don't mean to turn you off short-shifters. A lot of people track short shifters without any problems. It's just I don't seem to know my own strength and a short shifter isn't a good thing for me and the way I drive my car. Right now I'm being forced to be gentle between the gears and it's costing my time on the track - which isn't good. A short shifter may suit your style of driving just fine.

^^^and as for me it can't be short enough I love the short shift and I do use it for autocross and for me it works great!
I would recomend if you keep the oem one incase you don't like the short one. |
so its just the one bolt on the bottom where the linkage connects and then the oem shifter should just slide down?
|
buy new shifter bushings, get a big brand short shifter like B&M.
Your going to need a 10/12mm and a punch to get the shifter linkage pin out. Not to difficult. |
how much do they shifter bushing cost?
|
20 something bux. i did mine with a B&M shifter and Energy bushings...feels great. don't over tighten the bolt otherwise your shifter will be really stiff
|
well i will head off to the parts store tomorrow to figure out how much a bushing will be
|
there's 2 in the kit. 1 is stabilizer bushing and the other is linkage
