piston ring
any idea of the work involved in replacing a worn piston ring? ...i've narrowed my oil burning to that.
i'm looking for general costs and comparing that with a new b20 motor cost...
-------- has b20 for $950 ... would i be able to use the same transmission and ecu from the b18b?

Tranny yes, ECU, don't know.
If you're gonna rip apart the block to replace a piston ring you fried, might as well freshen up all the rings, bearings etc. If you ain't doing it yourself, just buy the B20.

its alot of work to tear the engine down to replace rings. and if your not doing it yourself expect to pay more than 950 which is the cost of that B20 you are looking at.
you can use the LS tranny and ECU with that B20 engine.

wr3d...you can use basically everything from your LS on that B20. the rings and bearings you can do yourself if you know what your doing, but be prepared for some downtime on your car. if your just re-building to stock specs, then dropping in a B20 is a much easier solution.

But if ur willing to learn and gain some experience, it's so much cheaper.
For instance
Piston rings $120
Bearings $60
Hone $50
New Headgastket $90
New Rod Bolts $50
New Headstuds $120
It's a lot cheaper than the B20 and you know exactly what's been replaced and what hasn't.
Plus buying JDM = buying used
Rebuilding = new
But if u want the quickest solution, buy the b20.

. Will in the end cost less than a used B20 and will basically have 0km on the bottom end if you do the things listed above.
how much downtime and what "special" tools are required to do the rebuild..... because i'm all up for learning and dammit.. it's cheaper and according to you guys, would probably be more reliable.
actually, downtime isn't a huge factor because i have access to borrow one of the many cars my pops has....

Jimmy go through my engine rebuild thread. Every picture I took, is every step I made. I just didn't document taking out the engine.
Also any tool that you don't recongize from the pics are one's that you'd need. Off the top of my head, piston ring compressor and valve spring compressor.
