Default Help :/ key gets stuck in ignition

I have an automatic 1996 acura integra, the keys tend to get stuck in the ignition especially when cold. Its becoming really iritating because sometimes i have to wait like 5 mins for it to come out and im afraid its gonna end up breaking, any suggestions?

More likely than not, the gear selector is not all the way in park- best way to check- put the gear selector on park, and check your dash- is the park light on? Probably not, if the gear selector didn't go all the way.

This is due to gummed up/dirty contacts in the gear shifter.

You gotta clean it, and regrease it.

I did it with mine still on the car, and I wasn't ---- about the cleaning part, but I used gobs of DIELECTRIC grease (remember- DIELECTRIC- the stuff you put on your spark plug ceramic casing- really thick Vaseline- I used Permatex- found in autozone), so it was pretty easy.

Check the P light on the dashboard when the key is stuck after putting it in park. If its not on (you see no red light), then you gotta do the above procedure.

the gear is in park because it shows up in the dash and the car is turned off and after a while the keys comes out, due to the cold it takes longer and longer for it to come out last night when i got home from work the key took 30 mins to come out, it seems the longer the car is in the cold the longer it takes to come out, does this happen to anyone else?

Is it just when it's coming out? Or do you also have trouble putting it in and/or twisting it?

I know in my accord the spare key has trouble getting it in and twisting it around have you tried both your keys?

do you have trouble puting it in gear ? i did a change over from auto to manual a few years back i noticed that there is a shift interlock located in the console area by the shifter it detects that brake pedal is depresd and car is in park the light is on a diferent circut the little interlock is a silver box looking thing usally two wires all i did was jumper it out you could try that if it fixes it change it it also would not release the key till i fixed the problem

^^^ that's great. I was thinking maybe it was a newer key and when they are new they tend to not cooperate as well as an old one, so after you used it for awhile it got shapen the right way and now it works better.
