Default gas smell minor leak

i get a strong gas smell in my car after filling half a tank...usually the smells stronger as i rip it

i had a new gastank installed less than a year ago and i kno it has no holes

the leak is coming from the fuel sending unit locking ring at the top of the tank

i had a mechanic lock the ring in place a few times already but it only seems to correct itself temporarily. after a week or so of driving it smells like gas again.

i think something is warped/bent maybe the sending unit itself so it doesn't allow a tight seal or the ring doesn't lock properly in place.

i have a minor leak while the cars running and after having it parked for a minute some run off drips as well i have an attached pic of the little spot

im frustrated and thinking of just using some red hi temp silicone/sealer to just cover the locking ring entirely and hopefully it stops any gas from getting through

any suggestions or experiences anyone else has had with this issue would be appreciated

btw i'm having this problem with a 90 ls teg

When you fill your tank, do you keep filling it after it stop, just to get it to that next doller, because by doing that, all that extra fuel does not all go into the tank, some goes into the charcole canister under the hood, and you will get the fuel smell after filling up or when ripping it after wards for a bit of time.

no i havent filled it at all since it started leaking again just 10 15 dollars

but anyways i may have fixed it i felt determined today and with a little help i took the locking ring off and seen that the gasket the mechanic put on or o ring i should say doesn't fit too well. it is not very snug around the hole or neck of the hole around the sending unit or tank. i has some cork sheets its like a thick sheet of cork material that's is supposed to be some sort of gasket maker kit thing and i cut a snug piece out and fit it tightly into place and then i even put the oring on top for extra seal. it was a bit ch getting the locking ring locked cause of all the cork and rubber in between but i managed with help and plenty of muscle. i filled up to almost full and have been inspecting it regularly but haven't found a leak yet

im going to order a new locking ring and o ring combo online i found for 5 bucks in case it leaks again ill just pop off the old locking ring and hopefully the new o ring is a lot snugger

this gave me a chance to shampoo my rear bench seat which is a bonus. i have it drying right now hopefully when i put it back the car smells nice
