I've had a couple things that have been on my mind.

Firstly, I've been made aware that in new cars, while in gear and coasting, the computer shuts down the valves and cuts of fuel supply to the engine. This would result in less fuel consumption than having it in neutral and the engine in idle. Engine technology hasn't changed that much in the past 10 years, after all, so I'm wondering if this applies to the '97 tegs as well?

Also, after a bit of research I've come up with inconclusive results for the size of the OEM fuel tank on it. I've been getting 50L but somehow that doesn't sound right...

Any insight would be greatly appreciated

no integras operated with that application, and your tank size is 40 liters i believe.

 

^^ I don't own a dc but I highly doubt that it has 40L tank. My DA has 50L tank. My sohc civic had 45L tank.don't see why they would have used a 40L tank.

 

50 liters, I just checked my owners manual.

When my fuel light is on and i fill it up, i get around 40L pumped in the tank and nothing close to 50L. As for the ECU shutting down the valve, it does not shut them down as the cam drives them, not the ECU, what happens is the ECU shuts down the spark plug, that is only on car as of 2004-2003 cars, and not all of them. Dodge was the first to do this with the new hemi, as they has 16 spark plugs, so when you are cruising at highway speed, your on half of the plugs,and only 4 cylinder. But once you want to go again, as soon at the TPS reads that you are giving it gas, it sends spark back to the plug, but it all depents on how much throttle you are giving it. GM does it aswell now as of 2007 with the newer malibu, it goes from 6 cylinder to a 4 cylinder on the highway. So as you can see it does not shut down the valves, just the spark plugs.

 

yeah i have a dc and i have a 40 litre tank. guaranteed, i have a logbook everytime i fill up of how many litres i put in and how many k i got to that tank.

my last entry was 34.78L and 463klm

 

Okay, thanks for the info guys. It's good to finally clear things up. For the gas tank, I couldn't find much on the net, just aftermarket 50L tanks, and I don't have the owners manual either. The car only came with plates, registration and the keys :P

I don't often fill up the tank all the way either, I usually put $20 into it and that gives me just over half a tank on the guage, and that gives me about 220km. When you're working only one day a week it's a lot softer on the wallet to watch $20 go than $40

 

The ECU on my 2000 ITR definately cuts the fuel when coasting, I know this because on my car I have a wideband O2 sensor and it reads "Air" when I'm off the power.
As 'Spike' said the cams always operate.

if i have cams, and they dont have the ring around the top( how to identify typer r cams)
what type of cams are they with out the rings? can it still be a typer r cam?

 

I don't know why there's so much confusion here, but the tank is exactly 50 litres. Believe it or not when your gas light comes on that doesn't mean your tank is about to go dry. I've driven from Markham to Barrie with the gas light on all the way, and still had plenty left. ( only filled up 46L on my Dc2 )

As far as coasting in gear to save gas? How much do you think you will save over the course of a full tank of gas? A few cents, maybe a loonie? The truth is you are actually wasting more gas by coasting in gear, due to the engine braking slowing you down quickly. It is far better, to just leave the car in neutral.

 

yea i would think the tanks are 50L. i put in 42 litres in my DA and i dont think she was bone dry...

 

yea 50L sounds right, i usually stay on top of my gas, but i've had it go an entire weekend with the gas light on, i estimate you've got about 100-150km after the light is on

 

^ That much, eh? I knew that it was intermittent, the light, so it seemed it just depends on how the gas sloshes around in the tank, but that's good to hear you're getting that much. It would bump my total mileage up to in the 500's on a tank

 

ya these engines just dont feel the need to use gas or something lol ive driven my tegz with my gas light on for a few days and the gas needle sitting on the empty line quite a few times its not fun but im not scared at the same time

 

Your car for sure has 50L, i have drained the tank, and put 50 L back into it.
