Default B18B afraid of water?

I recently bought another 3G Teg, it is a 97 converted to OBD1 using a fully 94ls harness. problem is when it rains the ignition begin to fail/weeken resulting in a masive loss of power and even large cloud of grey smoke causing blackouts on the road. first thing i did was change the plug wires, i put on a set of taylor spiros of my GSR.. No help.. then i changes the plugs and cap and rotor all that happend was a loss of a $100. then i changed the coil with one from my GSR that has a coil impedence of 9.6ohm vs. 16.5 of the gs. car would not run. my first thought was a weak ignition module.. So i changed the dist. from a friends car that runs well. and again the POS is casing issues. idle is rough/slight miss no engine light but got a code "36" when i did the base timing. oh yeah has a P54 ECU going to change that in the morning as im damn near lost now. i have also done a full fuel system flush 2 weeks ago.

Any one have a simular problem?

Taylor wires are utter crap by the way. Try switch those out with your buddies to see if it makes a difference. You for sure need to get the right ecu.

Also are you sure it's the ignition? How are you determining this?

I have since changed the wires with a new set of NGK,s im quite sure it is the ignition as it is interminint, i can hear the fuel ignite in the exhaust and cause a large grey smoke cloud and then suddenly run perfect for a few seconds or hours. a fuel problem rich or lean would show signs on the plugs but they are showing good burn. presure and flow was checked on the pump and all good. cam timing is ok if it was out it would run like a bag all the time. another fun thing about the P54 is that the speedo is out.. with a GSR tranny in 5th at 4K it only shows im doing 80Kmh.

I'd have to say it's the ecu then.

The cap, rotor, wires and plugs are all new this week. i had changed the coil with one from my GSR but the car barely ran so i replaced the distributor and then today the ECU and it still runs like ---- unless its cold might be due to less moisture since it has been warm this week is has been running like ----.

to review what i have done......

Changed plugs.. (the ones i took out showed a good burn)
Changed wire with a set of Taylors and then replaced with a set of NGK's
New cap and rotor
Replaced Coil. would not run with the replacement coil from my GSR assumed had a bad ignition module.
Replaced dist.
changed ECU

what improved..

Car idles at 750 no insted of 1300... still fluters between 500 - 800 bith a miss/slight backfire.

Doesnt drop out cylinders/ smoke ,backfire or blow out exhast sys/muffler

What hasnt..
Car at any speed/accerlation/decel runs with a miss/shutter and slight sound of backfire
at idel the motor does shake a lil more than i used too

At WOT slight surging between 3K and 6K

no CEL just as before any parts were replaced

im planing to replace the injectors with a spare set tomorrow im hoping to rule out the chance of a bad/leaking injector

My last resort... meet up with Nick from Teknotic and install his ECu with data logging and see what the sensors are sending to the ecu

have you ever done a compression or leakdown test on your motor? Could explain a lot.

other things to check
-valve lash
-any exhaust leaks
-timing

I have not done a compresion test yet, have not done a leak down test. timing was set to factory spec. this problem is intermint... it does not always happen unlike a bent valve or out of timed cam this problem some times goes away and other days become agravating to drive.

OK so lastnight it rained again.. and sure enuff the teg started losing power, back firing, and smoking like a ****... i have cleaned the dist. connector with electrical cleanner and no change... and like before it is only interminit last for 2 mins runs fine for 10 lor less and again... tonite im going to have a look under the hood when is dark to see if there is any visible spark leak. the only other thing im going to do is inspect the motor harness... this problem only began a few days after i changed the tranny which involves moving the engin harness and that this generally only happen with rain i could possibly have a bad harness. any one else have a suggestion?
