ls/vtec gives you the best of both worlds. lowend torque from the b18 and top end from the b16. if you swap the b16 pistons into the b18 you'll bump up your compression. use whatever tranny you want. i personally would stick with the LS tranny for 2 reasons. 1. cost effective and 2. you're not going thru gears so fast. the ls bottom end still produces enough torque if not more to pull you pretty good on the ls tranny

1st Gen meaning the 1st B16A motor to be used in production not hte first GEn of the civic. B series began in the mid/late 80's (JDM CRX SiR) after Honda stole GM's Variable Valve Timing Technology and came out with VTEC.
I would use the B16 Head and Tranny. The B16 bottom end is useless. Get the trq from the LS bottom end and high RPM HP from the B16 head. Make sure you swap for a short geared tranny SIR/ITR.
If you have lots of kms on your LS, I would shop around for a complete motor. B18C1/C5 or K20.
Engineland has a K20 for 2 grand. Just get an aftermarket ECU and JDM 5spd RSX tranny and your car will haul ***.
