Has anyone changed their wheel studs to the longer ARP ones?

If so what did the job entail?

I have to remove the hub assembly for sure in the front but I have not yet had to do this on a Honda. Just wondering if i do remove the old hub assembly am I at risk of damaging the bearing and not being able to reuse it?

the front bearing are in perfect working order so I don't really want to put new ones in unless necessary.

Again any advice form someone who has done this would be appreciated.

 

You do some interesting jobs on cars I see. Just out of curiosity why would you make the studs longer?

 

Spacers is my best guess

You'll have to remove your hubs and press out the old studs. Can be a major pain if they're really old or rusty. Be prepared to do a lot of work swapping them. As for the bearings, I'm not sure, but I don't imagine it being a problem.

 

i did mine when i did all 4 of my wheel bearings. i had a spare set of spindles so i used them to minimize down time on my car.

 

Spacers is one thing for sure. The car is used only for racing and track days. I race in RallyCross Series in Bancroft ON. I also will be doing a lot of lapping events this summer. Hopefully by next summer the car will become a full Rally car.

I am doing many changes right now that include swapping componenets from my old GSR. I have already swapped in the rear discs and now the fronts. The front LCA (rear portion) is also being swapped to allow for a front sway bar.

So, since I am "into" the front end so much I decided to upgrade the studs. they will be stronger and allow for spacers. The studs also hold wheel better. When I will be rallying there are service intervals and swapping wheels or just removing them to check things is mandatory. You can"t be fussing or fighting a wheel that is not holding on.

I am a crew member presently for 2009 OPRC Champion Chris Martin from Old School Motorsports. I have been supporting him for 3 years now in his E85 2.5Turbo 93 Impreza. He has the extended studs and they make a BIG difference for me as a crew person.

And stuff happens when you are racing. Should someone forget to tighten the nuts on your wheel and they loosen while you are doing 200kph on a rally road those longer studs may buy you a few more seconds to get stopped.

Safety, Strength, ease of wheel installation, more thread on the nut is what it boils down to. ARP is high quality and affordable. For under $100 I can get a full set.

I am into the job already and it should be done this weekend. The entire from spindles are on my workbench. Maybe I'll take some pics and post them.

Hopefully I can meet up with guys someday at a local meet!

Yep good memory! Was my only meet in fact. I am so busy racing or helping others race I rarely take the time for myself to go cruise and chat.

The Civic is SO much faster than the GSR but oddly I would rather have the GSR back. It just drives better IMHO.

I have owned about 7 G1's, 2 g2's and 2 g3's (both GSR's). I came from a muscle car background but an old 73 Toyota Celica GT changed my mind about imports long ago!

Anyhow yeah looking forward to a meet soon I hope.

 

I'll take some over the time that I do the work and post info on what to watch for tools used etc.
