Exclamation Pendulum Turn

Pendulum Turn

This technique is best done using a vehicle that is rear/all wheel drive. It is best performed on a slippery surface such as gravel or snow.
The general purpose of a Pendulum Turn is to allow the vehicle to turn through very sharp corners quickly or to destabilise a car in preparation for a power slide.

NOTE : This technique is similar to a Scandinavian Flick, but not quite so risky and generally requires a larger drop in speed.

The basic procedure for performing a Pendulum Turn is to drop enough speed that you can safely turn the car one way then the other, keep your speed constant immediately prior to the upcoming corner, then steer in the opposite direction, back in the original direction and apply enough accelerator to break traction on the rear wheels.

The procedure can be broken down into the following steps :

1. Drop off enough speed so you can safely steer the car one way then the other.
2. Maintain a constant speed up until just prior to needing to start the turn.
3. Flick the steering wheel to turn the nose of the car away from the corner, then back in the opposite direction to start the turn.
4. If a powerslide is required then apply enough throttle for the back wheels to break traction.

A few points of note :

1. This technique gets easier with greater speed, but if you get it wrong, well, you know, the faster you go the bigger the mess.
2. If you want to use this technique at low speeds you might want to invest in a tighter steering rack.
