Default B18A1 All motor build

Hey , I just got my 92 DA and already cant resist building a motor for it

Anywho I just have some tech questions because im new to B series. Basicly what I want to achive is a high compression 8000RPM responsive machine. I thought of going turbo but I just like the challenge of all motor tuning and trying to get the most out of a motor NA.

So far I have a list of parts that I would like to build with and I need to know if anything wont fit in a A1, so here we go.

-B16B Pistons
-B18A1 Rods milled 1mm on each side to fit the pistons
-Factory honda bearings
-Nippon chrome piston rings
-Crower stage 3 NA cams
-Crower dule spring and retainer set
-ARP head studs
-Block Girdle
-Cometic Head gasket
-Port match and polish

Thats just my basic list right now. As for bolt ons and port/polishing that can be done once the motor is together.

Thanks guys
Mike

you could get more compression if you bought some better pistons then type r pistons. I paid 1100 for mine je pistons and eagle h beam rods. Not sure how much you would pay for stock bseries but if it's close to that you should just spend the money on aftermarket pistons and rods for your block.

Rods won't fit, since they are not the right length.

Pistons you can use but from black ac gsr, that is also an option.

Have you considered performing a vtec head conversion (ls/vtec, b20vtec, frankies)?

Since you also mentioned that you would be performing a p&p on your non vtec head. IMHO wouldn't that just yield you flow that is on par with a stock vtec head?

Just throwing it out there.

Have fun with the soon to be build!!!!

Haha Thanks guys. I have thought of the LS/Vtec route but I would like to try my hand at a non vtec motor for once. I have a built Minime in my CRX and love it!! So I am just trying different things to see what these motors are capable of.

The reason im going with stock parts on this build is cause 1. I dont have the money to drop $1000 on forged internals and 2. I dont need them with a 200hp setup. They would be nice if I went turbo but then I would have to re tune the entire setup to work with a turbo.

As far as the rods and pistons go. So the GSR Pistons will fit?? And why not the rods? are they not both 1.8s? Sorry if thats a dumb question but like I said this is my first B motor car lol

Thanks a lot guys!!!

Yeah sure, it's your car. You do what you want. Pertaining to the piston question, yes pistons will fit. I thought you wanted to use Type R pistons instead of the GSR. The R pistons would yield a higher CR.

Just throwing this out there, if you want to explore the limits of a b18a/b, my suggestion in terms of CR (compression ratio)

GSR will yield you a 9.81 CR
Type R will yield you a 10.5 CR
B16 will yield you a 11.1 CR

Go with the b16, that's what I think.

Now for the con rods question.... it won't fit b/c the GSR and Type R strokes from the crank are different from the b18a/b variety. The GSR/R have a shorter stroke, which results in a longer rod. The LS's are the opposite with a longer stroke it has a shorter rod. So.... if you use GSR/R rods, they will pop out WAY too much @ TDC.

If you are going with a NA b18a build, and everything in the motor is taken apart. I would;

hone the cylinder walls out .25
oversized b16 slugs
shot peen or polish your rods
ARP rod bolts
balance your crank
get a crank girdle as you mentioned before.
research this further if you like but I am pretty sure you can somehow use GSR bearings. Since it is made out of a tri-metal substance it will be better in oil retention.

All this a completely unnecessary but it will give you a very reliable motor PROVIDED that it is built properly. Again this is just my suggestion. Do whatever you want.

Happy building

Wow , thanks man you just basicly put togeather a parts list for me lol

So B16 slugs are the same as pistons I take it? lol I thought the B16 pistons wouldnt fit cause they are a different diamiter than the 1.8s? Oh well thanks for letting me know!!!

all b-series pistons (slugs) b16a/b, b18a/b/c are interchangeable. They all share a 81 mm bore. Only outlier of the group is b20 which has a 84 or 84.5 mm bore can't remember at the top of my head but yeah.

Just remember if you run b16 pistons it will yield a high CR of 11.1 which means that you will HAVE to run 94 octane. The type R pistons will yield 10.58 which 91 is the MINIMUM.

LOL yeah kinda realized that when I posted. Your welcome.

P.S. ARP head bolts as well.

Let us know on the progress of things with pics!!!! lol

Thanks , Im grabing a 92 LS parts car maby in the next week with a good motor for a candidate. As I need my GS to get me around this year lol

I know about the comp ratios vs Octane as I have a CRX with a high (12.1) comp. I have to run 91 plus octane booster. Regardless I always run 91 in my cars. Just a personal prefference.

I will post some pics when I get the motor out of the car!!!

Thanks a ton for the help , really is appreciated. I will have to make it out to a meet next year!!!

octane booster is bs. i wouldnt really rely on using it for a built motor to raise octane lol. its a load of horse ----.

Hey guys so I updated my list. One more question befor I order all this stuff , Will I have clearance issues with the Type R pistons and Stage 3 cams??

Thanks

who is building your motor??? From what I know (mind you I do not have a fair amount of knowledge on the subject) you will have to roll your motor by hand to physically check for clearance issues. I have heard of claying the motor.

I've seen it being done to friends' motors but they were for time attack purposes and trailer queens. They had astronomical CR's around the 13 range.

If you find out more let us know.
