and then when the electrical systems fail in an accident or whenever you're basically stuck inside. Hopefully there is an emergency manual override of some sort.

Ive seen this before in a post, It was originally a lincoln mark VIII concept that never went into production. I belive only 5 of them was ever made, and a couple of them got destroyed.

Buff4Prez Yo 01-12-2009 12:49 AM

Looks fake in the video.

Pretty ------- stupid I must say.

irsdb7 01-12-2009 02:46 PM

its not like you can leave less space when parking.. sure you dont gotta worry about hitting the other car with your door but you still gotta worry that the douche beside you hits you

NOFEAR 01-12-2009 07:18 PM

repost from long time agoooo.

rubby-d 02-09-2010 01:56 PM

what if the car like glitches right out and cuts you in half while your getting your baby lmfao

Neon_Dave 02-09-2010 06:27 PM

Overkill. Gullwing doors on a deserving car are cooler. In principle, pretty cool.. but when you think deeper at it they're not as good as they seem.

Plus, these will fail hardcore when it comes to things like "safety" - i.e. quickly getting out of the car if you have to.. and "safety" in the structural rigidity that the B-pillar offers occupants who like to live in an accident. Also you're really stuck (be it inside or outside) if anything in the mechanism freezes or were to malfunction.

Neon_Dave 02-09-2010 06:36 PM

Haha just found this in the FAQ section:

Can you escape from the car if it is underwater?

"A standard car door cannot be opened underwater due to the pressure exerted by the water outside of the door and therefore escape can only be achieved through the window area by lowering or breaking the window if there is a power down situation. The Retractable Door can be opened manually and pushed down which will allow an escape through the entire door and window area."

Makes me want to drive one into a lake RIGHT AWAY!

D.T.P 02-09-2010 07:01 PM

Guys why do you bring up a year old threads?
Also to correct the whole theory with car under water, all you have to do is sit tight in the car till the pressure is even inside and out, or atleast close. Meaning when water starts coming into the car, wait till its fully or nearly filled with water, the resistance to open the door will be minimal. Then you can escape and swim up.
Breaking a window may cause a lot of damage since the glass will get pushed back in the car from water and will end up on you. The force the water will create can give you deep cuts.

Spike 02-09-2010 09:13 PM

That's some messed up stuff right there.

While this is true, if you're constantly sinking in some deep water, the pressure outside is always changing and there's a big delay in pressure equalizing inside the car, keeping you stuck inside till you hit bottom and then some. Add that time and freezing water, and you've got yourself serious problems. Not that these doors would offer me any peace of mind in that case anyhow.

D.T.P 02-09-2010 09:37 PM

Where/how will you manage to be trapped in a car while its sinking in deep waters? In theory yes, you are right but even if you accelerated to 150-200km/h and went right into water you will not travel far. Now also, how will you take the impact and stay conscious. Therefore the speed cannot be very great, and angle of impact and drop height should be small. So let's say you do end up 20-30ft in (because if much further the bridge will be much taller and the impact will knock you out), and its a deep river/lake whatever...so let's say you go 30-40ft under, the car will not fill up with water quick enough and you will hit the bottom. Now keeping a window just cracked and moving away from it to the back seat will give you time to relax and breath for a bit. Now I don't remember how dense water is, otherwise I could tell you how long it would take to hit the bottom, but either way, car will nose dive due to weight (an possible open window in the front) and in depth like that, the pressure levels won't be significant to cause major problems to open the door.

Btw I'm bored as hell at work so don't hate lol.

JDM_overdose 02-09-2010 09:41 PM

That car wouldnt pass safety. no door handles

Whoever made this car.

FAIL

I'm having a Fear Factor flashback. :)
Someone would certainly deserve an awful lot of credit if they could manage to stay calm and not panic in a situation like this.

XNXIXTXRXOX 02-09-2010 10:27 PM

scrid3r is 100% correct. they did it on mythbusters :) he speaks the truth lol. sorry to continue the off topic.

D.T.P 02-09-2010 11:23 PM

^^lol I did see mythbusters but I also love physics. Haha

Sounds like a great idea! BRB.

PS - if anybody wants a 97 integra for cheap, let me know! may be slight water damage and teeth stuck in the steering wheel, otherwise mint! :D

I remember that mythbusters episode, it was really interesting. With you on the bored as hell too.. I figure that's how we have the patience to type out paragraphs proving points about pointless things haha

JDM_overdose 02-10-2010 10:04 AM

why did we bump this year old thread

-4u2nvaz- 02-10-2010 12:31 PM

It was called "Dracula" - Back in the 1990's sometime...

The bad guy "Alucard" (Dracula spelt backwards) was driving a car with it.

Hahaha, ahhh... memories...
