It was originally done in Japan to help cool the motor a bit, though I doubt it did anything.
Then Cali adopted it because it was mad cool jdm tyte.

it does but very very little. under hood temps are cooler tho. i think it would benfit more with turboed cars

A buddy of mine has a 240sx with a rb25 and he goes to drifting competitions.. He has his hooded propped up as well and he says that alot of guys do it at the drifting competitions. He claims it makes a difference
