WOW!! Absolutely amazing clarity/quality/depth of field in that shot. Definately seperates the the low end from the high end dslr. Mind me asking what equipment you use?

That was shot using a 1dmkIII with the 70-200 f2.8 IS lens. Lighting is an Alien Bee b800 strobe setup behid the black seamless paper and above, shot through a translucent umbrella for the hair light (cheap softbox).

A second AB 800 was shot into a silver umbrella reflector on the right as the main light, and a silver reflector low and to the left was used to fill in shadows below the nose and chin

Camera not as important as the lens.

Nice pic, but the uneven dead space left to right is driving me nuts... Needs more on the left, or cropped tighter to reduce it on the right for me.

Edit: And since Blue Dragon just added, lighting, lighting, lighting...

^^ Thats intentional, its shot against black seamless paper, the brown you see on the left is a couch that I should acutally clone out.

Wasn't criticizing, just saying not my thing. I do believe I would like it better with that cloned out though.

hrm....how come you diden't use the new lense? looks sick none the less, i tried doing some skin softening on a couple of pics from my cousin's wedding in england, but they came out too...porcilin(sp?) looking. i did have good outcomes with the eye whitening and crows-feet reduction.

Oh I did, I have more with the new lens. Trenell came by, and Ryan did too. We were there for almost 4 hours, trying different things with different bodies and lenses.

The sky is the limit. It really depends on what you want to do with it.

If you really just want a starting point, I'd pick up a D80 and 18-200VR ($1450).

The D80 is still a great body IMO.

The 18-200VR is an OK lens. I have a love/hate relationship with mine. Its capable of taking some great shots, but you have to work around its weaknesses.

As a beginner you'd be unlikely to know any better anyway. Once you use some of the fancier lenses you get hooked. Having that entire 18-200 range to play with will help you learn where you want to invest in more specific lenses, ie the wide or tele end.

More important is that its the perfect walk-around lens to have no matter what you end up doing afterwards.
