Nissan unveils new 573-hp GT-R

Tokyo, Japan - Nissan Motor Company unveiled the new Nissan GT-R at the Tokyo Motor Show, with a twin-turbocharged V6 and four-wheel drive. The GT-R will be sold mainly through Nissan High Performance Centers.

The GT-R uses a "Premium Midship" package, a more advanced version of the "Front Midship" design used on other Nissan vehicles, and a system Nissan calls the world's first application of an independent transaxle 4WD system, with the dual-clutch transmission, transfer case and final drive at the rear of the vehicle for better weight distribution.

The GT-R also features an all-new 3.8-litre twin turbo V6 which produces 573 hp and 434 lb-ft of torque, and an all-new GR6-type dual-clutch transmission with paddle shifts. The body is a combination of steel, carbon fibre and aluminum and seats four passengers.

At its display at the Tokyo Auto Show, Nissan also unveiled four new concept vehicles, including the electric PIVO 2 city car, Round Box compact convertible, Intima luxury sedan and NV200 commercial vehicle.

hmmm, got the orginal specs from Canadian Driver, however, I think they are wrong since -

VR-series twin-turbocharged 3.8 - liter V6.
480 hp @ 6,800 rpm. 430 lb-ft torque @ 3,200 - 5,200 rpm.
Dual overhead camshafts with variable intake-valve timing.
Cast aluminum cylinder block with high-endurance/low-friction plasma-sprayed bores.
IHI twin turbochargers, one per cylinder bank.
Pressurized lubrication system with thermostatically controlled cooling.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Non Official VR38 Specs

20 Oct 2007

Engine Code: VR38

Peak Power: 480ps/6,800rpm

Peak Torque: 58.0kgm/1,700 - 5,600rpm

Details: VR38 Twin Turbo V6
The engine powering the new GT-R will be extremely lightweight compared to engines of similar capacity and complexity. Titanium intake valves and magnesium alloy exhaust valves will be used as well as a version of the new VVEL (Variable Valve Event and Lift) technology as used in the V36 Skyline Coupe. Red line is from 7,600rpm, with a 7,800rpm rev limit. Even after peak power has been achieved at 6,800rpm, 90% of maximum power will still be available from 6,800 - 7,500rpm with the power curve staying virtually flat from 6,800rpm to red line. The secret to the GT-R's speed is in it's ability to obtain peak torque at such low revs, as well as a very usable ------ of power right across the rev range. There is even mention of the engine being designed for a maximum power output of 600ps, but being detuned to 480ps for production.

The engine powering the 2008 GT-R is not part of the VQ family. Holiday Auto have reportedly been told that the engine appearing in the new GT-R has a 'VR' designation, leading them to believe that it has a strong connection to the VRH35L from the Nissan R390 that contested the Le Mans 24 Hour endurance race!.
