more airflow for the cai.. through bumper signal

saw this on somewhere on a g2 teg, then saw it on upnorthimpots.com done on a g3 teg (98+ style), so i decided to do this for track/auto-x days if i get back out (and this means my corners are no longer for sale)

it's for a little more airflow, since the aem cai has it's filter mounted right behind the passenger turn signal, so it can get air direct in front and from below :D

will get it all finished, then get pics on the car..

i grabbed my stock signals, dremel, and went to work..

2 things i see:
1. put a grill on the front, probably can just screw it from the inside - i am going to be doing this
2. the bulb that normally attaches there, you don't want it hanging, so i will be taking the plug mount and gluing it to the middle part of the turn signal, so i can still mount the bulb somewhere.. easier to see than explain, and i will show once complete

the 2nd bulb attachment that i'll cut and glue to the main piece, so it can still be mounted and not just hang

Sorry to tell you, but it's a useless mod.

The engine draws air in because the cylinder has a lower pressure than the atmosphere, so it creates a vacuum. Forcing extra air into the fender spot isn't going to do anything for you, especially if you don't have an exhaust system to get it out quicker.

jesse 05-09-2006 09:31 AM

well i have a 2.25" cat back exhaust, got a new high flow cat right here, and will just need to upgrade my header

it's worth a shot, and doesn't cost me anything though, so why not? :)

jesse 05-09-2006 11:18 AM

despite it not doing anything, i still want to finish it off just so i can try it out this year.. as mentioned i already had extra grille, zip ties, and this extra set of corners, so it cost me nothing but 45min of my time to dremel, mount grille, etc..

here's more pics, got more done..

yes my car is dirty, it's also not yet running

grille i used (thanks chester)

how i held it, decided on zip ties instead of screws.. no rust, easier to put on and replace if needed, etc..

Looks like it was a good job

fliptEG 05-09-2006 12:37 PM

i guess it would help keeping the air that goes in cooler

gsr rudebwoi 05-09-2006 12:49 PM

Nice! Weight reduction (a little (obviously won't make a difference just said it for fun*)), power increase (maybe because it's taking in less hot air from the engine bay and more ambient air). Can't go wrong.

oh by all means a diy is a diy and I love to see them. You should add this to the diy section.

It's good work none the less, just didn't want to get your hopes up for increase butt dyno response....LOL

kevburgler 05-09-2006 03:14 PM

good job on the DIY. i saw this on one of the older m3's with the 2 circular lights on maxbimmer. it was pretty cool.

lolll ram air plus + 20hp +25 w/ vtec

^says the guy who drives the crapaleir.

jesse 05-09-2006 07:00 PM

i know it may not even do anything, but for nothing and a bit of time, i figured why not try :)

and i don't think it's ugly.. also i won't be using it on the street anyway, as i put in a picture of the daily bumper lights that i used (blacked out)

HyBrId 05-09-2006 08:43 PM

^^ if its only for the track then y not just leave the whole pass. side corner light out completely?

jus wondering...either way good work...:yeah:

mdt115 05-09-2006 10:58 PM

good job..

i've been wanting to do this for a little while as well.. but retain the signal part.. i need a dremmel... anyone got one i can borrow for a few nights? :)

jesse 05-09-2006 11:11 PM

hybrid- need a place to mount both bulbs still.. and needed a piece also to mound a grille cause i don't want rocks flying in..

technically i could just unscrew it altogether, yes.. but i want it protected

a lot of air will still get sucked in this way regardless though, like a tight vacuum.. should be decent, if it works at all :D

here's final update of how it's all put together..
there's no room for the second mount with the bulb still attached, so i wanted it sealed so water can't splash up into the bulb housing.. i've glued it so far, gonna put a small bead of caulking on the inside just to be sure.. will hold the second bulb mount, and i'll just put the bulb inside the car while in use
