Did you pick this up from Shoppers Drug Mart (I know we carry it for sure)? B/C if you did, you should've waited until Saturday if you have an Optimum Card. 15x the points. You could've bought the memory card w/ your points instead. ;)

If you didn't get it from Shoppers then just ignore my post.

Should've just forked out the extra coin and got a DSLR. I had my kodak knock off dslr for a year, it was garbage compared to my rebel.

Usually thats where a camera like this leads you to. Give him time. Then he'll have a nice P&S for grunt work.

I work for Fuji... make sure you do the firmware upgrade for this camera or you'll get underexposed pictures in sunlight!

p.s they're made in China :P

I agree with Mark. DSLR's are getting cheaper and cheaper. Cant beat the quality. Its a night and day difference from a p&s. Regardless, looks like a decent camera.

I agree partially, but...

To get a single D-SLR lens that covers the same 33-396mm range your only option is the Tamron 18-270mm [27-405 equivalent]. I couldn't find a price for that one right now, but the Tamron 18-250mm is currently $400 on sale.

His whole Fuji camera is priced at $230.

So $230 all in, or $400 body (assume D40) + $400 lens...

He may still decide that he wants to go to a D-SLR eventually. In the mean time he can learn a lot from using that Fuji. Plus as I said earlier, then he'll still have the Fuji for dragging around.

I have two D-SLRs and I still wish I had a pocket P&S a lot of times. I'm dragging my "man purse" (Lowepro Nova 180) around with D80, 18-70, 70-210D everywhere right now. Not exactly a compact package.

^i'd still rather buy a used rebel or something along those lines, use the kit lense for now and grab a used lense later on.

i do agree with having a point and shoot, but the fuji one he bought would be kinda big for just a walk around, i have a small sony cybershot that i take around on vacations and ----. but yes, walking around on a beach with a backpack and a SLR with telephoto is retarded..lol

g2tegg Oct 17, 2008 04:18 PM

Personally I think that a p&s should be small and compact. These fuji camera, like the canon s5, resemble a dslr in many ways and also have some nice features (face recognition, video option etc). But they do lack some features that only a dslr can offer. Personally I would get a cheap rebel. I have seen them used for under $400. In my camera bag I have my dslr and my small compact a95. Perfect if I want to make a short video or where I would rather not carry the big camera around.

in terms of a point and shoot, it's up there, (except for it's size compared to other point and shoots) in terms of a SLR, it's pretty much bottom line, sorry.

^well its not even considered SLR, its an SLR style... all these fuji cameras you see except the 'Pro' series are SLR style... the lens is not actually removable. Honestly, Fuji are only known for their color quality, thats all lol... thats why they're going under. Plus I think most pppl are getting SLR;s for cheap nowadays and fuji have none to offer except the S5 which is super expensive and big and heavy and so complicated

Fuji has some interesting sensor tech with the SuperCCD, although it does present some of its own issues.

The S5 isn't really all that expensive, big, heavy, or complicated, so I don't know where thats coming from.

- Its only $1000 right now
- Its all magnesium (Nikon D200 body) is a little heavier than the lesser plastic bodied cameras, but its one hell of sturdy body as a result.
- Its no more complicated than any entry level pro D-SLR
