I tried something different....

4 Attachment(s)
I had a 15 inch mtx sub which I got off of Thusee, and was offered an alpine amp for 60 bucks, I didnt have a box, so I decided on doing something cheap so I could have it up and working when I picked up the amp on Thursday.

I grabbed some mdf wood from Home depot 4 x 2 feet, and traced out the space behind the back seats and cut it out with my table jigsaw. Then I painted it up(yes I like painting lol) and installed it on thursday. Its not a high end sub, but it still gives me the kick I wanted.
I forgot to take pics before i started cutting and painting though

What do you guys think? Does it look ok or does it need some work?

After I painted it

It took me a day to do all the cutting and painting, then I installed it the next day after the paint dried thoroughly. I used some foam tape behind it so it doesnt have any gaps between the trunk and the wood. its pretty much sealed tight with the bottom portion under the wooden piece used as a port.

Also to make this it only cost me 20 bucks since I already had a jigsaw.

thusee 08-16-2008 02:42 PM

lol godo work man my friggin amp died on me today so gota find 1 but looks good(Y) so no more back seats? also how did u enjoy driving without a passenger seat for a day LOL

xxBvanxxx 08-16-2008 02:44 PM

Back seats are still there I made it so there was breathing space for the sub, and wont get crushed, I still havent finished it for ppl to sit in the abck yet though. Driving with no passenger seat is cool, more room to throw ---- in lol.

Buff4Prez Yo 08-16-2008 02:53 PM

um why didn't you just grab some more wood from home depot and make a box?

that sub won't work well in a free air setup. especially if the seats are up.

B18C5er 08-16-2008 03:01 PM

although i commend your effort, since it's not a sealed enclosure, i'm sure the sound quality is severely lacking.

Nawaaz 08-16-2008 03:11 PM

yea, i only costs like 30 bucks at home depot for them to cut your wood and everything to build your box, with the mdf, true story, thats how I got the one in the TL done.

xxBvanxxx 08-16-2008 05:02 PM

lol honestly it sounds fine, I could have just as well have purchased a box for 40, but I wanted to try something different. No rattling either, i was able to get rid of most of the distortions in the overall sound system, I jsut need to grab an amp to power my back speakers and I'm good.

xxBvanxxx 08-16-2008 05:10 PM

sound could be louder, but its loud enough as it is lol.

93Da_Chik 08-16-2008 05:18 PM

nice work bvan! lol ur dedicated haha

mkmk 08-16-2008 09:10 PM

this is an excellent way to make a cheap box, if you think about it the whole trunk is your box haha...
when you get some money do a fiberglass one, they are sick plus you can custom make your design...good work man...
how much watts and rms is that sub?....

I dont wanna knock on you or anything BVAN... just making conversation, but is it really dedication, when you just make a face plate for your sub, and not a proper box, dedication is when you want to build something, and you do so, properly, IMO, not as good as it couldve been, you could have still used the faceplate idea, and build a box behind it or something, just doesnt seem like alot of time and effort put into it, once again, not trying to put you down or anything, just saying thats how it seems.

thusee 08-16-2008 11:02 PM

^^^ LOL Bvan probably in a corner crying now....

Naw I understand where your coming from, grabbing the materials, and tracing and measuring out the template, etc and cutting the wood and painting it all takes only about 5 mins... I wasnt going for the box in the trunk, I was actually trying to keep my trunk space, and utilize this for now, plus I like how it sounds. Im pushing the 325rms right now, I can power more, but I really dont care for that loud pound as I used to. I know my sub can sound a lot louder, but I dont even max it out with this. I'm past that phase lol my old system was running a 2000 watt Rockford sub with a 4000 watt amp running it. Running 1000 True RMS in my other teg(which I passed over to my brother). Trust me when I say I jsut wanted to try something different and see how it came out, personally I think its great and thats what matters right? :D

Thats definitely what matters, as long as your happy with it, just some CC from me.

xxBvanxxx 08-18-2008 01:02 AM

^ dont worry next time I'll do it a little better lol. I'm not very good with wood working and all i really dont like touching that it isnt my thing, the face plate was really simple to make and I really wanted some sound so i jsut did it and im good, but if I had some time to create a box i would have done so. I'll be building a box behind it when i get some time.

JDM_BITCH 08-18-2008 12:19 PM

that's port is called an airleak. a port is tuned to a specific frequency and it's determined by the length and diameter of the port as well as the amount of defined amount airspace in the enclosure.

if you're doing the a free air or infinite baffle enclosure, you want to make sure the baffle (where the speaker mounts) is completely sealed, separating the front wave of the speaker from the backwave, otherwise you get cancellation. you also want to make sure the driver is designed for it too.

RedTeg 08-22-2008 12:00 PM

^^^^QFTMFT.

With the proper enclosure and a free air sub it would definatly sound better than it does now. but if your happy with the way it came out then it all good.

Question how often do you drive with your seats down though? seems like you might as well drive around with a big "STEAL ME" sign on the car?

How does it sound with the seats up?

esguerra 08-22-2008 05:34 PM

makes the car look really cheap

FuzzyLS BRO 08-22-2008 05:39 PM

15inch? how heavy is it?

---> in before the "that's what she said" comment.
