Buff4Prez's LS/Vtec Build *Update 02/03/08*

Finally got my stuff back from the machine shop this weekend and right now it's sitting at Addicted Performance. couldn't get any engine assembly lube so very little got done. right now i'm focusing my attention to the bottom end since it's my biggest concern in the build right now.

Block has been cleaned, decked 5 thou, bored over 20 thou, honed and got the mains honed aswell.

Attachment 20086

RS Machines PR3 pistons .020 oversized, Hastings Piston Rings, Shot peened and honed PR4 Rods, ARP rod bolts and ACL Race main and rod Bearings.

Attachment 20087

GSR Girdle was machined to fit on LS main caps because the GSR main caps wouldn't line up properly on the LS Block. i just mocked it together to get the pic. not pictured is the oil pickup, windage tray, pump and pan, all from a gsr. also have ARP gsr main studs.

Attachment 20088

LS crank is balanced and micropolished. only 1 gram was taken off to balance correctly.

Attachment 20089

that's it so far. i hope to get this done and out of the way soon cuz i have the other, more expensive half of the motor to do still.

keep checking for updates

flipek5 06-18-2007 08:07 AM

Looks good Mark! Thanx for the sticker!

Smartass pHO 06-18-2007 08:38 AM

I'm surpised the machine shop couldn't supply you with the assembly lube.

What's the timeframe to have this puppy running???

Kraz13 06-18-2007 09:16 AM

Looks good, keep us updated.

IntegraJoe 06-18-2007 10:44 AM

i knew a guy with a frankenstein build (ls/vtec) and it was pretty damn quick...good luck with it

they offered it to me but i said not to worry about it....stupid me i should've taken it. they gave me some plastgauge tho.

does Honda/Acura sell assembly lube? i could've sworn they did. i went to the Acura dealership to pick up the thread thing that hold the oil filter and i asked the the parts manager for "Engine Assembly Lube" and she says. "What's it for?" i almost laughed in her face.

i'm hoping the motor gets finished by then end of the summer. cash flow is the issue. cams and valvetrain are gonna ruin me.

Solid GSR YO 06-18-2007 02:03 PM

mark i have some assembly lube at my place i can bring down to the shop for you, i have an unopened one.

Buff4Prez Yo 06-18-2007 02:04 PM

shweet! thanks.

FuzzyLS BRO 06-18-2007 02:09 PM

^dood, i have an almost full bokkle of assembly lube you could have had. anyway, that crack girdle looks good on that LS block, i gotta give you props for building an LS/vtec proper!

Smartass pHO 06-18-2007 02:32 PM

All you guys sharing lube.

:hay:

WildoutWhiteGSR 06-18-2007 04:31 PM

Haha man you should of pmed me. I also have assembly lube laying around. Oh yeah, the old school guys call it moly lube so maybe try asking for that.

Don't worry about the head too much. Plastigaging the block is gonna be a bitch. I hate it. Having someone help you with it is 100 times easier to do.

non-VTEC 06-18-2007 05:32 PM

looking good..... which machine shop did the main line bore hone?

Buff4Prez Yo 06-18-2007 06:01 PM

All the machine work was done by The Balancing Act in St. Kitts.

Update!

it was long overdue

anyways, there's more progress on the motor.

i was dreading having to assemble the bottom end and the fact that my schedule is totally opposite to Dave's at Addicted Performance, there's was no way anything could've gotten done. so I called up zman. he checked all the clearances on it (which he said came out great), trimmed and clocked the rings, inserted the rods/pistons, crank and main girdle and torqued it all down. i added the oil seperator box, water pipe and tstat housing. before i go any further i need to get a bottom end gasket kit and check the clearances on my oil pump. once that done, the oil pump, pickup, windage try and pan can go on.

on to the pics

in the meantime i've also gathered a collection of parts, mostly for the top end. still gotta get the machine work done to the head and get a few more parts.

since progress is picking up, the next update won't be 8 months later like this one lol

i'm really looking forward to seeing what these Brian Crower cams will put out. after much searching, i haven't found anything on H-T about them for the B-series, so once it's dyno'd i'll certainly post the chart there too.

Kraz13 02-03-2008 08:44 AM

Good job mark, its actually starting to look like and engine now!

Blacktie 02-03-2008 09:08 AM

Jerry at the balancing act was pretty good. he explained to me all the work he was gonna do and how it's done. he was pretty conservitive with the work he had done like the fact that he didn't want me to bore the block more than .5mm, in fear of the sleeve cracking or getting the 8mm ARP rod bolts (i brought him 9mm) cuz he didn't want to drill out the rod caps in fear that they might break. they do alot of v8's, i was the only one with a honda block there at the time but he still knew his stuff. i asked him to balanced the crank and he said that if it's off, it's only by a gram or 2....sure enough he only had to take off 1. i ended up paying $500 for all he work that was done, it was exactly what he quoted me before i even brought my stuff there.

to fit the Moby cawk intake i'll have to relocate the battery. i have a few different options on where to put it but i haven't decided yet.

here's one option. this pic here is what had me dead set on getting one

my separator box came with the block, i just cleaned it up a bit. i looked for the part number for you on acuraoemparts.com but i couldin't find anything. they probably call it something different. have you checked the Helms manual? i've seen part numbers in there before.

i believe so. they're the stage2 N/A

after i made the update i went and ordered the the gasket set for the block. so it should be here in a couple days. if i'm lucky, it'll be early spring.

bbTeg 02-03-2008 04:07 PM

I appreciate you looking. I have the P/N for B16 but I am trying to verify if they are the same box or not. Apparently there are 3 types of separator box and I can't verify which one I have till I take mine off my car. Oh well, still have 2 mos till driving season.

3NE 2NR 02-03-2008 07:18 PM

smith_customs 02-03-2008 09:52 PM

Nawaaz 02-04-2008 01:34 PM

Mark, its coming along very nicely, I dont think im gonna build my bottom end this summer, probably just going to work and save up enough so I can get it all done in one shot during next winter. I think Im gonna have to steal the cf intake/battery relocation idea :D

Solid GSR YO 02-04-2008 10:12 PM

hmmm competition, time to build my tranny.

Looks Good guy :)
