Big day today...

So today I installed a new transmission into my car (there were some bearing issues with one that I was going to be using... long story). All went well with the install and I took advantage of the warmer weather and decided to get the street tune started.

King Motorsports provided me with a VERY good basemap based on the specifications I gave them for my build. These guys are simply the best!!

After spending about 30mins getting the low speed and low load portions of the map sorted out I started working on the more interesting part of the maps.

In the end I managed to get a pretty decent start on the map with the A/F ratios looking pretty good. I'll have to do some fine adjustments but they are within 0.2 of my targets everywhere.

I'm going to have to work on the idle a bit more. The pro1 cams are not like other cams... while I managed a good idle in the garage over the winter, things changed a little when I hit the road. It wasn't terrible but it wasn't great either.

The engine saw many trips to 9000 RPM today and felt like it wanted to go much further. The A/F maps were telling me that the car wanted more and more fuel as the RPM was hitting the 9000RPM mark, a good indicator that the engine is still making good power up there.

What blew me away with this engine is how incredibly light it feels. It is not like anything I have ever driven. Rev matching is completely effortless. The engine spins up and down so quickly.

Frictional losses in the engine were also VERY small. When trying to engine break (to help seal the rings). I could barely feel any drag induced by the engine.

I headed back to the garage after about an hour and cracked open a beer and fell in love with my car again...

Tuning was done with Hondata S300 and PLX-R500 WB O2 sensor. The PLX has a headphone output which allowed me to listen to the knock sensor as I setup the maps. Much more accurate then simply listening for the marbles in a tin can.

And finaly some pictures for Amanda :P

Thanks! HE is 7 weeks old.

WildoutWhiteGSR 03-24-2007 10:32 PM

Congrats once again Doug.

Quick question, did you have the crank lightened at all?

Baby NSX 03-24-2007 10:43 PM

Thanks Trenell,

yup... the crank went on a diet (lost 5lbs). You can see from this picture that it wasn't "knife edged":

WildoutWhiteGSR 03-24-2007 10:46 PM

Oh ok, you know what's weird. Is the gsr crank weights 4.4lbs less than the type r crank.

I wonder if I'll feel the same benefits once I get cammed

Yes... my crank has pretty much the same mass as a GSR crank so the dynamic feeling of the engine may be similar. I would bet that the light rods and pistons are the biggest contributors as their mass is furthest from the center of rotation. Also, because the weight was principally removed from the parameter of my crank it is possible that it has a lower moment of inertia (meaning it is easier to spin it given the same mass).

My gut tells me that if your piston/rod weight combination is close to what I'm using then the improved responsiveness of the engine will be pretty much the same...

Sorry we couldn't stop by Doug. I had something to do today. Now I'm really regretting not seeing your babyboy!!

THANK YOU for posting pics of him! Tell Melanie she looks great for giving birth only 7 weeks ago. I think Rachel might have some competition with her baby brother. They look VERY similar!

FuzzyLS BRO 03-25-2007 02:10 AM

Stock fuel rail (I may pick up Skunk2 composite fuel rail to complete my bling), stock fuel pump, and RC440 injectors.

Word, as the centroid approaches the axis of rotation the systems moment of inertia decreases.

Paul,

Sorry for the delay... things are very crazy at work right now.

Your boy looks great! you must be over the moon. Congratulations^2!

Because things are so busy now tuning is pretty much going on when ever I get a free moment. I'd love to have you and your brother come down and over see the development however it would be impossible to plan it. Maybe in a couple weeks we can hook up.

Besides... your a very busy man these days as well ;)

Amanda,

Always great to have you and Trenell out our way! Rachel enjoyed your reading to her and I know you enjoyed learning her tricks for staying up late...

It's a shame the weather is not so great on your big day...

Trenell,

What tuner did you use last year?
