Yet Another Engine Question
Ok so i been wondering once again and does anyone know if a bottom end of an engine (Cylinders) get worn out , because i was thinking of possibly doing just the top end of a gsr( therefore the head) instead of getting the hole thing, but my engine is near the 300 xxx mark, so i dont know if thats a good idea, or i was also considering getting it polished and then getting the gsr head opinions please suggestions anything will help
P.S Its the stock rs block |
i assume your talking about a LS/vtec. with a LS bottom end at 300,000km it would be a good idea to rebuild it seeing as the piston rings would probably be filled with carbon not allowing them good contact against the cylender walls thus causing your motor to burn oil. sure you can put the GSR head on the 300,000km LS bottom end, however expect to burn alot of oil at wide open throttle and whenever vtec engages. what i would do is install new pistons and piston rings, USDM B16 pistons to bump up compression, hone the block. you can use B16 pistons on the stock LS rods so that you don't loose the rod/stroke ratio that makes the LS bottomend have more torque. then, add the golden eagle LS/vtec kit with the GSR head and your new LS bottom end and have a reliable LS/vtec setup.

add arp rod bolts, vtec oil and waterpump and tuning to that list
|
balance the rotating assembly and add a crank girdle and you be able to spin it up to 8500rpm no problem
|
might wanna add oil squirters aswell

^well it all depends on how much you want to spend, you can go for a forged piston like endyne, JE etc, but if your going N/A then you may not need a forged piston. check out golden eagle's website for the pricing on the LS/vtec kit. i would highley recommend this kit personally. when it comes to rod bolts and head studs look up ARP. as for cams for you application, there's alot to choose from, toda,skunk2,JUN,crower just to name a few.

Buddy Club Spec III+ are an awesome choice for an LS/Vtec. they're excellent in the midrange. looking at about 10-12hp at 4000-5000rpm and don't even need to upgrade your valvetrain.
|
|
you guys know your stuff thats for sure, lets say i wanted to go turbo and i got the forged pistons , would it be low compression or is my car gonna be able to rev high ?
|
^see now that's a whole differnt ball game. when it comes to boost and compression, you can go low compression and boost say at 8psi and make (for figures sake) 300hp. or, you can go high compression and make 300hp at 6 or 5 psi, however it would require alot more tuning to keep temps down and keep your motor from detonating.
|
for the lift and duration on bc 3s they say, (HT) to at the minimum run itr inners and stiffened inners. my buddy with bc 3d on a itr head and forged bottom end with 11.9:1 compression used his itr valvetrain and nothings floated. i tried to get a copy of his dyno off him, but unfortunately he lost it. he peaked at only 186 whp with a full hytech setup, however the car was tuned that way because it's a street car. it really ballsy mid and i think the torque curve was pretty much flat from 3500 rpm up.
|
i think 186whp would equal to around 200 at the flywheel repectively. :w00t: another goal in close range.
was he running ls/vtec? |
hmm what kind of tunning would it need ? do you mean adjustments or replacing other parts ?

ls-vtec builds aren't exactly cost effective... you can find gs-r swaps for 2500-2800. Ask around for people who have actually built an ls-vtec in canada (ie: cnd $$) so you can get a real idea what the average cost is. it will might work its way up towards 4 grand including tuning. You can get a ITR swap for that, and you can definately get an H22 swap for that, plus extras.
Its YOU spending the money, do some research on it first, you don't want to get knee deep in it and realize its costing way more then you thought it would. |
my ls/vtec is gonna be about $2000 all said an done
|
what exactly are you doing with your ls vtec swap and how much hp are you looking around ?

LS/VTEC setups are not very expensive at all. there are lots of B16 heads for sale pretty cheap.
depending on if you want to change the pistons out of the stock non-VTEC bottom end you could probably do a VTEC head swap for under 1000 bucks. |
if you were going to build a LS/vtec on a budget, i think it can be done for about....$600. (the ghetto way)
|
well considering i will be selling the teg in the future time i dont want to invest a lot of money into it, i was lookin on ebay for the complete head, and as for the pistons i will replace the pistons because they are worn out after close to 300 K, anyone know where i can pick up the head cheap ? and also anyone know how much it would cost for the head swap in a shop, or a shop that will do it cheap
