When a timing belt snaps...

Just wondering...on a 92-95 civic non-vtec motor (I don't know designations for d series that well).. When the timing belt snaps, what could it possibly destroy in the process?

Reason being, i might pick up this 92-95 hatch for a beater but the timing belt snapped, otherwise the car is in pretty good condition.

Would it be as simple as slapping on another head? I haven't the slightest clue...looking for some insight.

ThanX.

valves could be bent, if a valve hit a piston really hard then it could have made a whole in the piston, it could have possibly dropped a valve and turned a piston and the head into a baked potato. it's hard to say, but i'm 90% sure it won't be pretty.

that's worse case scenario. for all we know it might just be the belt itself. it's a good idea to tear it down and check anyways

For the amount of money it could take to fix that motor, would you consider just dropping in another D or even a B-series motor? Just throwing that out there.

Ya, i'm gonna pick up the car for about $400. I no D series motors are worthless and don't cost much, but I just wanted to know if I would require the whole motor or just a new head. The car itself is pretty solid, minimal rust, even for the typical honda spots and everything else seems to be in working order.

So if the worst case scenario were to happen, would i just need a new head or an entire new motor?

If it were up to me, worst case, I would simply drop in another motor. The hassle of taking apart and fixing a D motor wouldn't be worth it to me when I can take that money and drop in a D15B or D16Z6, or even a B18B or B20Z.

hmm...good point. I wouldn't drop in anything other than a stock d15. not looking for any performance...just from point a to point b. It's a civic...no way would i mod it. Next year, i hope to buy an IS300 so i'd just sell the civic or give it to my sister if she learns to drive stick.

yeah i say drop in another shitty d series.
if you're just using it as a beater
but its always good to have a decent beater as well lol

tdot2gteg 08-18-2006 02:03 PM

you could always go el cheapo and drop in a ZC

B18C5er 08-18-2006 03:48 PM

Cool, that looks like the route i shall travel. just drop in another shitty d series motor.
