Weird Idle Noise

Hey guys, I had a quick question

When i turned on my car on this morning I heard a weird 'squeeling/grinding' noise when I warm up the car. My engine mods are: short ram intake, headers, cam gears, high fuel pressure regulator and lightweight pulley. I run 10W 30 Castrol in my car. I've never heard this noise before. It kinda freaked me out and I noticed it going on for about 30 seconds or so, and then after it stopped.

I was thinking whether it was cuz I am running a thicker oil in the winter, and that its not breaking apart when its really cold, and all that goodness in my motor was grinding together was causing the noise. (I think it was -15 c or so this morning in Sauga).

Either than that I have no clue. Any input would be helpful.

Btw its a 96 with almost 300 k on the body and 80 on the motor

Thanks

squeeling and grinding are too completely different noises...

squeeling could be your belts in the cold...one of them starting to wear out...

grinding could possibly be they 10w30 your running, making something grind right at start up till oil is thoroughly ------ed...

if so, it should happen over and over on these cold ass mornings...get someone to start your car tomorrow morning, and listen and try to pinpoint the location of the noise...

k, i started the car this morning and everything went smoothly.

The 'squeeling' noise was from my neighbour's garage (i dunno what the sound was, coincidently it went off the same time yesterday and today)

The 'grinding' noise was absent today, musta been the warmer weather (-5c or so today) so thats good news for me, and thanks for the reply

about the noise check if its coming from the distributor it might be the distributor's bearing coz it happened
2me last month and bout the grind try switching fr:10w30 to 5w30 its more thinner, anyway this is what you should be using for the winter

yes i will switch in 5w30 this week, i found out that 10w30 is rated for a low temp of only -7c or so, so i've been doing damage to my motor with our frigid ass temperatures lol
yea i know, stupid of me, but you live and you learn

WildoutWhiteGSR Feb 12, 2007 01:05 AM

you haven't been doing any damage. all modern oils will do fine in these temperature's. Running with no oil is worse than running 10w30 in winter.

It could just very well be that you due for a oil change, or you got a defective oil filter, that's if it's oil related.

You really gotten find the source of the noise first
