Turbo cleaning?

For all the boosted guys... or guys with turbo knowledge. I have read in some places that its okay to wash your turbo out with water, and then other places they say not too. Was wondering if anyone has experience. I have two turbos from a 1990 Nissan 300ZX that im cleaning. Thanks for any advice guys.

if there is any oily residue on the compressor wheels and inside the compressor cover you can spray some throttle/carb/brake cleaner to clean some of that up.....but if those area's are coverd in oil chances are the turbo may require a re-build or else the stuff may come back.

Seeing as how the turbo is used (and if you can't tell how hard they have been used, or how long) i'd recommend a rebuild. Take it apart yourself, or pay a shop to do it.

Use spray-on gasket remover to rid your turbo of built up oil, and other residues, or take the housings to a machine shop to have them bathed in solvents/caustics. You can clean the turbine/compressor wheel's with solvents and a wire brush.

Generally, the shaft, bearings, and compressor/turbine wheels are all replaced (better safe then sorry).
