transmission fluids
 

so i bought my car pretty much changed everything i needed for maintenance
however my friend suggested for me to change the transmission fluid as well since i have a automatic car.

my question to you guys is how often do you get your transmission fluid replaced.. i am used to driving my benz which has a lifetime transmission fluid but on a integra i know that is not the case...

please let me know on what i should do .. :D

There is no fluid that is lifetime, not even benz. You should change the tranny fluid every 100,000 km's or so if you drive normal, but if you like to beat on the vehicle, you should change it earlyer, because if you never change the fluid after like 200,000 km's and then you change it, you tranny can start to slip, because the new fluid is not as thick as the old stuff that has been in there getting all the crap in it.

Honda ATF is the way to go. cant go wrong with oem.

can i get that in canadian tire or part source?

If you want the best get some royal purple in that baby. you can get it at performance world...and for honda ATF prob have to pick it up at the dealership there fluids are not that expensive.

GM Tranny oil in a Honda :confused: doesnt seem right to me some gm oils are ok but not sure about this one.

it makes perfect sense as long as its manual.
many people use the GM Synchromesh fluid for manual transmissions. i am not sure how well the GM auto fluid works.
if you want something from crappy you can get the synthetic atf fluid, or royal purple from part source [which is highly rated from what i hear]
for Honda ATF you must go to the dealership.

oh mine is automatic not manual
so i guess gm is no good for me then

The GM fluid is good for 5 speeds, not auto trannys. The honda fluid you would need to go to Honda to get, or you can go to napa and buy the Castrol GTX multi import ATF fluid, I use that in Hondas at my work, and its made for Honda/Nissan/Toyota.

Pretty much now a days, there is only 1 type of ATF fluid, and the ATF6, it's designed to work with every kind of auto tranny out there now, as its an updated fluid.

okay guys i started to think about this topic again
how do i know if my transmission oil needs to be changed ?
i took the dip stick out today and it looked like it was leveled fine and the colour was kinda light brown.. i assume thats okay but than again i am no pro

can u guys suggest any tips for me on how to tell if my tranny oil needs to be replaced or not.. when i drive the gears shifts good.. but than again the person i got my teg of might of never changed the tranny oil..

also i would i be able to tell if the previous owner changed this or not..

If the previous owner never changed it, I say do it, Our auto trannies are super weak and they break down if theyre not maintained and driven right. You're gonna get tranny kicks after a bit. I have them going into reverse.

I think regular changes should be done every 30,000kms? Correct me if Im wrong guys.

If youre iffy, just do it. Get the fluid from Honda, and you'll be happy. :)

just so people know, one day I called the gm dealership inquiring about gm syncromesh...and we were just talking and I explained to him I had a manual 5 speed acura...and he proceeded to tell me that gm syncromesh is actually used in their automatic cars... lol but it seems that people debate between that and honda mtf... as to which is better, and its like the battles of car brands all over...

light brown??? it supposed to be red! change that ---- asap lol

when in doubt change the fluid. never had an auto teg no i have no idea what fluid it takes.

Manual trannys use 10w30 motor oil.....ya you read it right.

i was having problems with my beater on tuesday. i lost reverse and the gears were a pain to get in and out of. i changed the fluid and now it's better than ever. the old ---- was like water.

my good car is running GM Syncromesh Friction Modified. runs mint. at $13 a litre (Retail. i paid less :D), it better run mint.

so i can use castrol gtx 10w30 ????

whats the difference with the honda ----?
wont it get black like my motor oil?
i dont think my tranny fluid gets black

It can get bad man. For my Teg i dont think that ATF was ever changed. I changed it at 270XXX :(

Don't go to the dealer and get there stuff, go to napa and get the Castrol GTX AFT fluid, it works for all imports and it's a ---- load cheaper then the dealer. We used that stuff at my work, and we have not had any problems with it at all.

oh man 30 bucks aint ---- to me.. if i go to napa i can probably save what like 5 bucks.. lol

Just change the damn fluid...
 

Also, be sure that when you check your transmission fluid the car has to be warmed up and at operating temp. If your doing it yourself, with the car at a stand still make sure to put the car through the gears after you changed it and you think you've added enough, when car is warm, check the fluid, add if necessary.

so i went to honda dealer today and got my atf transmission fluid
i changed it and everything... i noticed my old one still had a bit of red in the colour
but to be safe i changed it anyway, because i know the previous owner didnt change ----
so now my car drives a bit better than before.. im loving it !! :)

I was thinkin about getting my fluids flushed and refilled... everyone seems all pro for the tranny fluid on an automatic, what about the 5spds?
