Timing Belt installation
 

hey, I have a b18c1 and I had to somewhat rebuild it. I had to change over to a new block, i've installed the head, intake mani, exhaust mani, new waterpump, have a new tensioner and new belt. I need someone mechanically inclined who would be able to spare some time to help me install the timing belt correctly so I can move on with this and finish it up.

Its easy. What you do is set block at tdc and set both cams at tdc. Crank shaft pulley should have a mark. Also both gears have arrows, make sure they are pointing up. Put the belt on and once everything is aligned with tensioner installed but not tightened, spin the block over by the crank pulley just a bit. Once belt gets tension, have somebody tighten the tensioner bolt down. Once belt is tight, spin the engine over 3-4 times and align it at tdc yet again and make sure that cams and crank pulley are aligned. If it seems like its off by a tooth on either of the cams or crank, do it again. It will get easier as you do this more than once. When I was doing it for the first time I got it right 2nd try.

thanks, but my problem was when I lined up the marks, and turned it, the belt seemed loose after when I went to look at it again... I think i'm just lost on how the tensioner part is actually supposed to put enough tension to keep it tight? Unless i'm just being paranoid lol...

haha thanks, I understood how to line up the lines and get everything going, what I was stuck on was why one side was going tight and the other was loose and it wasn't like even tension all the way around. Had a buddy show up tonight and we got it done tho, figured out how to play around with the tensioner pulley to move the slack around! Thanks for the help tho :)
