Timing Belt

How can you tell if your timing belt needs changed? Will it damage my engine if it is allmost worn?

My manual says change at 90,000, I bought the car used and it has 171,000 and no proof of that being changed....

Solid GSR YO Sep 11, 2005 01:31 AM

just change it anyways, better be safe than sorry

Buff4Prez Yo Sep 11, 2005 09:07 AM

ya you're better off changing it cuz if that thing snaps, you might be looking at a new motor or a head rebuild

Have you guys changed yours for no reason?
I'm not having any problems, but I have been told it may damage your engine if it's worn almost, but for $500.00 I think I wanna know it needs to be changed before I do so....

WildoutWhiteGSR Sep 11, 2005 07:34 PM

Yup, I bought my car at 160,000kms and I changed it.

Why risk $500 when your engines $2000+

SIC1 Sep 11, 2005 07:36 PM

^^^ Just make sure you have a compressor, if you plan do it yourself.

They have actually raised the timing belt change to 160K but just like any other maintainence.... Pay little now or pay a lot later on.

Lyricalb2003 Sep 12, 2005 10:34 PM

Alright, thanks!

I think I'll get it in to get that changed..... they say I get a new water pump and all other belts too for $500, so it'll give me peace of mind....

Do you know the signs of it going?

WildoutWhiteGSR Sep 13, 2005 03:57 AM

There is no sign, it just goes.

oh, I thought it would make a noise, or change performance of the car?

Anyhow, I got it booked in for next Wednesday...

i thought belts started to crack and fray when they were old?

95integra Sep 15, 2005 06:50 AM

^^^ Bingo. When the timing belt gets hold you'll notice cracks under neath the belt on the teeth, or you will be able to see the teeth lines thru th ebelt.

B18Booya Sep 15, 2005 07:07 AM

^^^ not quite dude... besides, its not like u can examine ur timing belt to a point where u know its true condition... thing is pretty much outta reach... when i did my integra, i did it at 120k, and there were no signs of ----... its just one of those very few things you gotta bite the bullet and do, regardless of how ur car's running
