Thermostat

hello everybody
alright i did some research and still not sure of the problem. the temperature guage on my dashboard does not stay in one place. sometimes its in the middle (average or normal zone which is between "C" and "H" or sometimes a quarter away from "C". NO the engine doesn't overheat. the temperature guage has never passed the normal zone. ok so question here is, is it thermostat thats bad or its just normal. cuz one guy tells me that it depends when the radiator fans will go on and when they the fans turn on the temperature automatically drops. and one guy tells me its fine the way it is.
p.s. when i shift at high rpms (like 3000 or 3500 instead of 2500 rpms) the temperature guage moves to normal zone or a quarter away from "C" quickly but soon as i go easy on the gas padel the temperature drops to just a few lines away from "C".
i hope i explained well.
thanks

Weird. My temp gauge hardly moves in all conditions.

But then again I haven't done any track days this year.

yeh same here it hardly moves. but lets say the thermostat is bad, is driving with a bad thermostat bad for engine besides over heating?

looks like the thermostat is gone.

I drove for a year without replacing my bad thermostat no problems...

however it was a pain when it went bad bad... that's when I replaced it:
I was driving in the cold and had the heat on... all of a sudden a gust of cold air filled the car. brrr... it wasn't pleasant...

so I mean if you can't stand that, then get it fixed... $50 parts & labour will get you heat in the winter!!! lol...

sounds like the themostat is stuck open to me and yes if you are not reaching operating teperature your going to be getting increased blow-by because the rings and pistons aren't expanding from the heat as well you may feel a minor loss in power and gassier smelling oil on your oil changes. It is the same idea as starting your car cold and driving off the power just isn't there because hte engine hasnt reached it's operating temperture yet. Shitty gasie oil does not protect the engine as good, it losses viscosity.

Definitely worn out thermostat. The spring eventually goes to ---- and they open too easily.

On my gfs old '92 LS I couldn't believe how quickly the heat from the vents would cool off when the t-stat crapped out. You'd be driving along all fine with normal heat, stop at a light and it would start to cool instantly. Start moving again and within a couple seconds heat again.

On that topic I'd like to meet the bugger that decided to locate the thermostat housing where it is on that car.

or you could be low on coolant and the gauge is fluctuating because of it.

have the cooling system checked over.

ya or that lol never thought of that. never usually think of the most obvious things.

its got to be the thermostat. everyday before i leave my house i check to make sure i got enough coolant and i always do. today while driving i noticed the guage was between C and H which is good and a moment later it went back to 2 lines past the "C".
