don't really know about the vtec problem

but the car dying could be a faulty fuel pump or main relay

Does the check engine light go on?

Vtec will not engage if you are low on oil. Also the vtec solenoid may be malfunctioning.

For dying out, it could be multiple things. Fuel supply/dizzy on its way out/iac valve malfunctioning.

+1 on things said above just check over everything. And might have to replace some of those mentioned above. Good Luck. Keep us informed.
