Problem Replacing Rear Speakers
 

Hello,

I'm in the process of upgrading the stereo in my car. Yesterday I set out to replace the rear stock 6 1/2" speakers with Alpine 172's (I don't remember the exact model number).

They do not fit into the existing plastic mounts, so I ended up creating a "spacer" from 1/2" MDF to allow the new speakers to drop into the existing mounts. Everything is fine and dandy until I try to put the speaker grills back on and find out that the built in tweeters stick out too far and don't clear the grill.

I am thinking about trying again with 1/4" MDF but I don't even know if that extra 1/4" will give me enough clearance.

Does anyone have any experience with this or know what I can do to mount these speakers properly?

Modifying the plastic mounts seems impossible and I don't know how else I could mount them.

mount dpf on the back side of the plastic speaker mount is possible to give u more clearance.

if nohting else works id say ur either going ot have to heavily modificy ur existing plastic mounts or even create new ones somehow.

OR return ur speakers ad get a diff set of speakers. i have kappa 6..25i in the rears of my car, they fit (barely) and are excellent speakers.

make sure u remove the rear plastic panels when doing this, it is next to impossible if u dont.

if u cant get this figured out bring the car tothe meet on the 29th, ill be happy to take a look

i don't understand what you mean. what is dpf? someone suggested mounting it to the back of the speaker mount. it sounds like the best idea but i am worried that it won't give enough support to the speaker.

i started modifying the plastic mount and realized that it would be a fruitless task. even if i were able to increaes the size of the whole, i'd have no room for screw holes.

hahah.. i removed the rear panels. took me a few hours, mostly because i was struggling with the rear bench. should have taken off the seat backs first :P

i think i broke at least 10% of the clips keeping the rear trim in too!

sorry my mistake i meant mdf. mount the mdf on hte back side of the plastic speaker mount.

that seems like my best option. do you think there will be a problem with lack of support?

^^^ perhaps if the speaker is heavy, u may have to reinforce it somehow. if possible take some pix and post, i havnet seen wut it looks like back there in a few years

i will try to take some pics of the final set up. i think that if i need to add support i can rig up something with ductape and hangers. at least that's what my friend recommends.

can one of you give me directions on taking the rear panels off?
the whole thing cuz i gotta replace my rear speakers too.

If anyone needs help with installing stereo equip. Msg me..I've done it all hundreds of times.

Use a flat head screw driver to pry the panel off. You might want to wrap it in cloth so you don't damage the plastic.
