How do you know when your oil rings are shot, or need replacing?

When your oil light comes on.

When you start burning oil (blue smoke), or when you have to add oil between oil change intervals, and there are no oil leaks

if it puffs blue smoke on acceleration, compression rings are toast
if it puffs blue smoke on deceleration, oil rings are toast
