Lowering help?

Anyone here feeling friendly and wanna help me install springs into my 94 GSR? I know it's really easy and don't really feel like paying $100 to get it done besides i'd also like to learn.

With the weather all nice, I can supply drinks and even pay someone a fair fee to help me out? Thanks in advance!

The only think is, with your car being a 94, the rear lower control arm bolts are most likely seazed, and with out heat, they are not fun to remove, you end up breaking the bolt.

buy some extra bolts from honda before you start.

most likely you'll need the lower bolts that connect the shock to the lower arms.

buy some liquid wrench penetrating oil, and some anti-seize. you'll also need a torque wrench.

i find that a long hollow pipe and a breaker bar helps.

mines a 98 and there seazed and apparently it took my mechanic 6 hours @ 50 bucks an hours to install coilovers thats 300$ i paid for labour, thats terrible

cut the olds out with a cut off wheel and cut your losses (not very much there stock)
pull it out the wheel well (upper half of strut) slide the coil over sleeve on and then the spring, bolt it back up, tighten the sleeve setting screws and your ready to set your hight and go for a drive to give them a good bounce and give them a hand to settle faster.

thats how i've always done it. i have NEVER touch the rear LCA bolts in my life, i have had 8 EF hatchbacks, 1 EF sedan, a CB7 (1990) accord sedan and a EG sedan. those are some serious numbers for never touching a rear LCA bolt. and the EF's are older than 94 and 98.

all you need is a socket set and grinder with cut off wheels. dont need a compressor or any other tools. but if you do its a bonus.

i hate using the hand tools im all about the power tools Lol.

Okay so don't touch the LCA's and cut off which part? I know there's 3 bolts to loosen the top of the Shock/Springs and 1 bolt to remove the top hat off the shocks.

Im pretty sure my LCS bolts are seized.

chaser 05-21-2009 08:42 AM

oh you meant cut off the oem springs completely and slide it out and slide in the new ones. Im putting on a set of HnR's so it won't be coilovers.

btw: Being the first time ive done this and the HnR springs dont have the indications. Which are the front and rears. I know a pair is taller.

slvr_dc2 05-21-2009 03:01 PM

I believe the front coils are tighter (shorter) than the rears.

I did an install on my '00 Teg and the rears were a bitch. I ended up taking the LCA off with the strut and just installed new ones..Its a good DYI project especially for a first timer.
Don't forget to rent a spring complressor to take your old ones out!

chaser 05-21-2009 05:27 PM

Thanks man! are there any DIY thread on how to do this on the forum? can't find it.

Bolded 05-21-2009 07:07 PM

Ya my 94 the rears were seized as well, your better off to take it to a mechanic

jasonjai 05-23-2009 02:38 AM

i think on the springs it should have an "f" or "r" for front or rear. good luck, man!

DOHCnoTEC 05-23-2009 11:23 PM

ya cut the springs right out, the coil overs are shorter so if you compress the strut and slide the coils over it and your laughing bud.

yeah loosen the 3 strut nuts (not the center one yet, wait till spring is cut out) there are 2 other bolts too and there connected to the little bracket from strut to the inner of the well, take them out to. then pull it down to you and cut the coil out in pieces , then loosen the top strut nut, pull top hat off (dont lose any pieces or bushings from it) slide coil sleeve on, then coil, tighten setting screws, put strut back on and bolt back together, set to desired ride height, put wheel on and go for a boot.

dont think i missed anything lol. there must be a write up somewhere. try honda-tech.com for more honda DIY's. might find something there too.

RallyGSR 06-05-2009 06:33 PM

Please be careful getting out the old springs. I hate to hear a chunk flew up and caught you in the face. I have heard it too many times.

I had a 3 year old GSR and the bolts were seized as well.

Suggestion just like the others:
  • New lower strut bolts from Acura all around
  • New bushings as well (they will be getting old) you can upgrade to energy suspension at this point as well
  • get a decent spring compressor CTC rents them for free!
  • Ask for some assistance from someone who has done this before.
  • grab a haynes manual as well to help guide you

lastly use common sense....

I did my springs by myself. It wasn't fun. Had to use a prybar too. Having help would be nice.

Luckily I didn't have to remove the rear LCA b/c I know they are seized.

You can either rent a coil spring compressor, or buy it for real cheap at Princess Auto.
