Idle Problem Pissing me Off!

Okay, my car's been ideling however it wants whenever it wants for about 6 months now. I never got around to taking a look at it cuz it wasnt a big deal. Now i got a loud ass dual exhaust and a remote starter and my car idle's off the charts sometimes and just sounds stupid. It used to be only when the car was cold, and when it would warm up it would be fine. Now it does whatever it wants whenever it wants. My guesses were the throttle position sensor or the speed control sensor. I've replaced my speed control sensor and cleaned out my throttle body, but still the same ----. Anyone have a simlar problem?

vacume lines are sum tyms the problem

checked em all, majority of them are all new

also sum civics that have an irratic idle find replacing the PCV valve helpful, it might help with the teg too

there may be a problem with an o2 sencor or perhaps your air intake on the throttle body is sticking?

there wuz this radiatior thing i read about sorry i cant remeber it entirely, check teamintegra..i think i saw it there

I had a similar problem a while back it turned out to be my Speed Sensor. The engine was also throwing codes so I was able to get it diagnosed. Is your check engine light on? It could be your TPS, or even if your engine is loosing vacum. But in this case your idle would be servely irratic the entire engine would run really rough.

Checking your PCV is a good idea if your not getting positive crank due some blockage it could result in an uneven idle. Best thing to do it just change it. It could also mean your O2 sensor is on its way out this also causes a rough idle. Also check your idle control valve..

There are a number of things that could cause your vehicle to run rough. A little more information as to how and when its occuring, at what rpm when your after short runs, cold/warm etc.. could maybe give a little more insight to your problem.

It's ideling up and down constantly between 3000 RPM's and 1000 RPM's. Ever since i cleaned the throttle body it "ALWAYS" idle's up and down now. It wont even stop.

ahhh if it is a 2nd gen not sure if it happens on the 3rd gens but my car does that right now and has been for awhile. It is a possibility that it is the IACV or Idle Air Control Valve I know that's my problem and a simple cleaning job fixes it but me lazy.

There is a way to check if it is the IACV by removing your air intake and sticking your fingers in the holes in the throttle body opening while the car is running.. again im talking 2nd gen.

here's a link anyways about idle trouble shooting..

I've tried the IAC valve. I've cleaned most of my throttle body in and out. I replaced my speed sensor. I replaced my MAP sensor. I replaced my engine temperature sensor. I've replaced my PCV valve. All thats left is my O2 sensor. Which im going to try next. When i plug the IACV hole with my finger then my car goes back top idling normal.

Great link! thanks.

idling between 3000 and 1000 rpms?? thats bad.. wow. It sounds like you have a vacum leak - check all your vacum hoses

pornstartom 06-07-2005 08:28 PM

I might have exagerated a bit, it was between 1000-2000.

BUT I FINALLY FIXED IT!! 6 months later!

Thanks boys, that link ------ owns. It was the FITV. I dont even know what that stands for. But i took it out and the white plastic thing was loose. So i screwed it back in and shes back again! i havent heard my car idle normal for ever. Thanks alot. I love you all

Haegl 06-07-2005 11:59 PM

Glad you were able to get it fixed .. FITV = fast idle thermal valve or fast idle valve in other words, you should also inspect your IACV - if you have any problems with the IACV (electronic idle air control valve). best to just replace it to avoid any future idle problems..
