how often do i change timing belt?
 

how often should i be changing timing belt
somebody i think told me every 100,000 km
im at 142,000 km in my car but im pretty sure the previous owner didnt do nothing
as mint as my car is i think it would be a good idea to change it to be on the safe side

do u guys change ur every 100k and usually how much is it to get it replaced is so ?

In the owners manual it says to change it at 100,000 kms. But that's also with normal driving and not being hard on the engine. But also with how are weather is hear it's best to change it around 100,000 kms just because the cold and hot weather does affect the life of the belt, because it will make it stretch earlier then what it should. But if your not hard on the engine, you should be able to get around 100,000 kms out of it with no problems.

sometimes i get excited, imma talk to my friend see how much money he wasted on changing his timing belt and water pump i hope its nothing to steep

There's no such thing as wasted when it comes to timing belt and water pump lol.. I'd much prefer $180 in parts for belt/pump than $1200 for an engine job.. I'd say start by pulling off your valve cover and manually barring over your engine and inspect your timing belt for cracks or tears. I caught my belt tearing on my routine valve adjustment the one day. Ended up swapping the whole engine cuz I couldn't pull the crank pulley off lmao.

Pretty much, if youre worried about it...change it. Last thing you want is your timing belt to snap. IT will result in bent valves and a bunch of other crap = the death of your engine

how much does labour roughly run for a timing belt?

and is it tru that u mite as well do water pump while your at it

t-belt and pump is about 3-5 hours of labor on average. depending on what the shop charges it can run you between 350-500 bucks just in labor.

and YES do the water pump at the same time....or you will pay double to have it replaced when it leaks.

mechanics these days dont know ---- unless they take pride in their work. Your better off googling a bit and doing it urself

Mechanics most know ---- because they have a licence to work on a car, and you don't so really you don't know ---- about working on a car.

It's 4.0 hrs on my work system for labor.

ya but some mechanics dont care about how good they do their job
i rather do it myself with good help of course
that way i will know everything will be nice and smooth
who needs a mechanic license when my brother is a honda freak like no other

I wasnt talking about you spike. You seem to be a good mechanic because you take pride in your own car, so you take that pride to work and do it on other cars.

I know a lot about working on cars, just not enough to help other people unless its somthing I already know.

the timing belt is a bitch when doing it at home...i did it semi when i did the swap. you might wanna consider a mechanic.

I always change it around 90,000kms. Go to a certified mechanic shop or somewhere you trust. It isnt hard to do, but you do need some skill to do it properly. The average quote I got was around $800-$950 area for a B18B1 engine, and lesser for the SOHC engines

me and my buddy is gonna do it ourselves
all i gotta do is order the parts and its all good
it might be a bitch to do but at least that way i can save some money
we will do it better than a mechanic
i got importfest ouside my house everyday :D

not true. these honda motors are non-interference. you can blow a timing belt and you wont have valves smoking pistons, unlike the famous chev 350's

most if not all honda engine's ARE interference. very very few are not and if you don't bend valves when the belt breaks you are lucky. even on a low compression LS engine there is always a chance.

my car's got 308000 km on the original motor..im not changing the Tbelt, as I wanna sell the car within the year. The way I look at it is this: $500 for the Tbelt change...or about $600-$700 for a new b18...i'll take the risk of $100-$200.

i stand corrected. just did a bunch of research on this..... turns out that these are interference motors. which is strange cause i thought i remembered a thread on here about this exact same topic that said they were non-interference

Yes the B18A/B are interference engines, so you have to be careful when doing it.

what is interference engines mean ?

interference engines piston will hit the valves if the belt lets go/ or when change the belt and if you turn the cam or crannk they will contact.

and non interference engines have just enough space for valves ect that if the belt snaps there will be enough clearance and everything won't go bashing into each other. Which is why if a timing belt snaps on an interference motor, to be lucky, you usually have to be idling or at low rpm.

oh i see now because on my first car dodge avenger which had a mistubishi engine
i remember when the belt snapped i just had to get a new one and no damage was done to the engine.. i guess hat one was non interference engine
makes sense now

honestly if you have the right tools and a helping hand you can probably get the belt done under 6 hours if its your first time

i dunno^^^^^ personally i think that if the belt goes and you have to swap the engine, then your gonna have more labor and expense than just buying a belt and lifting part of the engine out. kinda a chancy gamble if you ask me..... i wouldn't do it, but then again you do have a point....... i guess

yea i guess you have some point but at the same time the amount of time and hassle it will be to get your car to a shop as well as waiting for that work to be done plus labour probably comes out more than a belt and having to wait maybe a week or less kinda sucks. if your engine runs strong might as well keep it in good shape

I doubt you can get the crankshaft pulley off if you don't have the proper tools. Good friggin luck.

You need to read, it was an IF statement. It's not hard u just tools. Need leverage, a long ass bar because sometimes the impact gun can't even do it. I tried with a 500 dollar gun, didn't work. Also need the crankshaft pulley holder or u can try to get someone stomp on the brakes.
