How much will it cost to remove rust and repaint the entire car?

As the title says, I am thinking of re-painting my entire car but most importantly I want to remove all the rust from my car for good. Any idea how much this would cost or any good suggestions for a place to go to?

edeh 05-07-2007 09:47 PM

Rust is like cancer , and i believe for the whole car spending about 1.5-2g's
depending on how bad it is
i know a shop give me a shout

Cybertron 05-07-2007 10:15 PM

well at the moment its only under the doors and the rear wheel area
I was thinking of $1000

yeah probably even cheaper if you ask me

Buff4Prez Yo 05-08-2007 01:42 AM

you get what you pay for just remember that.

Cybertron 05-08-2007 07:31 AM

true, I had my rear panels "rust removed" and painted once before. It only last about 1 year before the rust started to come back.

its me.. mario 05-08-2007 07:37 AM

"rust removed" in that case was probably just sanding and filling.

best thing to do with rust on 1/4 panels is to cut and weld or replace.

Cybertron 05-08-2007 01:37 PM

well welding is a must now, its gone to the point where its rusting through. anyone know of any good places? cheap?

Spend the money and do it right once, doing it twice will be more costly in the long run.

i thought i didnt have alot of rust .. once the body guy gets deeper that 1000 dollars is gonna double or triple. itS NOT cheap to get alot of body work done.

Hey

Well if the doors are really bad, your best bet is to start looking at wreckers for cars with good doors, and see what kinda price you can get them for, it might be better and cheaper then bodywork, plus OEM quality. And as everyone and yourself included said, you will have to get some quarters put on, maybe try aftermarket, see how much they are?...get a price, and then say you'll strip the car to help offset some of the costs.
Good Luck

keep in mind that even if the area is cut, welded and patched, depending on the quality of the work, it could still come back.

from my observations and experience, with the majority of the quarter panel rust repairs, the quarter is repaired, but not much is done to the wheel well housing that it attaches to, as that part is probably rusted too. most places will just dump a bunch of bondo or seam sealer to fill in the gap between the newly formed quarter panel replacement and the wheel well area to fill the hole and it eventually comes back because water gets to it.

usually the only way to really do it right is also replace the rusted metal on the wheel well housing, either by welding on a new wheel well housing or cutting off the rusted part and forming a patch repair panel to replace it. the second option seems more practical imo.

you can get a half decent paint and mediocre rust repair job for between $2000-2500 ish, but the rust will probably come back in a year or so. (mine lasted 3 years until it came back) the only way to completely get rid of the rust is to drop the extra $1500 ish for new quarter panels. and even if you do get a new quarter put in, you need to make sure that seam sealer is used and rust preventatives are applied so the new panel doesn't rust at the welds.

as for the door, +1 for looking for another one.

I hear where you're coming from, it's hard to justify paying 50% of the value of your car for bodywork.

But if you plan to keep the car forever, then that seems to be the only option.

i payed 3800 for my job, colour change, all rust removed, new windshield. lips fitted, and front end damage the rad support had to be pulled. Thats 1000 more then wat i payed for the car 2 yrs ago. I sometimes think to myself what am i gettin myself into. Now that i got this much into it, money and time, im gonna just finish it.

DJay75 03-11-2008 11:32 AM

my car is in right now having the rust cut out of the two quarter panels and front hood and then a quick silver-like spray of paint until i get the money to paint it properly. i made sure he was mig welding the new metal pieces instead of braising it (around the $400 area). the guy is in newmarket if you're in the area. i can show you pics of it after. you don't need the before shots - you've seen rust before. :)

To get it properly done,I'd spend the money once and make sure its right. Cutting/welding is probably the best idea only if you go somewhere a bit more reputable. (this means doing the job properly without cutting corners).

I know a place, they charge 450 per corner/wheelwell. They do a complete job and the work is guaranteed. Sounds like its a bit over your budget, but perhaps you should talk to them and see if they'll do it for you. Like others said, you're probably better off getting new doors from a wrecker. That way you can tell the body shop to concentrate on the rear fender areas. (I'm assuming both sides have rust)

We soooo need an Official Auto Body Shop as a T.I. Vendor.

Reza 03-12-2008 09:31 PM

I spent $1300. If i could go back in time would i cash out another $700 and get it done by a real shop? Yes i would.
