Headlight lenses and HID
Trenell, saw your post about clearing up the lenses...
How'd you do it? I tried and it didn't turn out as good as I expected it to.. 1000/1500/2000 grit wetsanded, then meguires plastix polish.. definately a difference but still pretty cloudy.... Anybody with info please chime in.. I'd really like to clear and sand my pitted headlight lenses nicely so my cutoff is sharp and the colour shows. |
Don't laugh, boys (because I may sound like a n00b), but I used GooGone a couple times...works pretty good. :yeah:

AAAhhhh Jimmy the secret lies within the machine. For really bad lenses you gotta sand a lot of material away. Mine were bad. I sanded for about 15 minutes each lense. Spent most of the time on the projector side, a little on the highbeam side. Then switched lamps and started again.
Then after that, got out the good ol orbital machine and polished away. By hand just wasn't doing it. Give it a shot. Oh I used plastic-x as well. Your on the right path, the steps are there, but just try a machine for polishing. Sanding by hand is fine, just takes longer. |
Plastic X will work? What happened to Rubbing compound? (which I still cant find)
|
Yup.
You can find rubbing compound at crappy tire. From my results the plastic-x worked best. It kept the lense clear instead of just removing the stratches. |

Ahhh... random orbital sander... I was thinking of using that but didn't want to screw any electrical parts because it needs to be wet sanded.
|
jimmy, ur headlights aren't that bad. the other pair i picked up were, alot worse. Too bad i didn't show u when we met up. I wet sanded by hand and i got pretty good results then i used a polish to clean it up..it works just takes time.
u can really ---- it up with 1k girt its so fine, you can only make it better. EDIT- I mean u can't ---- it up.... |
^
mine wasn't as bad because i used plastix on it a few times so it sorta buffed out small pits and scratches.. but this time i decided to wetsand with 1000/1500/2000 .. it turned out all smooth but it was sooo cloudy. Plastix cleaned up most of the cloudyness but it's still not up to par with yours or Trenell's lenses. I wanna get it nice so when I push my projector forward the output will be lovely. |
Yeah I understand what your saying Jimmy that's how it was for me as well. Then I got tired of all the arm work to get the lense's clear so I busted out the rotory.
Just keep at it by hand it it will eventually get there. It was just too much elbow grease that I didn't care to put myself thru. |
The next thing I'm gonna polish is the amber corner lights and my new taillights when I get them off of Matt lol
|
What kind of orbital do you have? Air or electric?
|
Makita 9227c
|
ahh.. i was thinking more along the lines of a random orbital sander..
