Gear Grinding In 3rd and 4th

So I was driving my car the other day and I noticed 3rd and 4th gear grind. Also 4th gear pops out of gear somtimes. Anyone know what this could be? I think its probably somthing in the shift linkage but if anyone else has another idea of what it could be please help me out. Thanks.

worn out synchros

MPR 09-06-2010 01:36 PM

When was the last time you changed the tranny fluid? If you do change it, use ONLY Honda mtf.

teggboi 09-07-2010 01:11 PM

^ actually, gm friction modified synchromesh is magic.

MPR 09-07-2010 02:22 PM

^If you say so, go for it.

I'll stick with the honda stuff... :)

ya the fluid is fine and i dont think it is the synchros bc i had it in fourth and slowed right down and strated off slow in 4th and everything was fine, it seems to only happen when I go from 1st all the way up to 4th, if that makes sense. I checked the shift linkage bushings and they seemed fine and the shift linkage seemed to work fine. Maybe the shift linkage needs some adjustament? or can you even adjust the shift linkage?

kartheegan 09-07-2010 08:13 PM

i have a similar problem like yours and have no idea what it is..my third gear most of the time pops out into neutral when i shift to it..dont know if trannys screwed or clutch or anything..if you find a solution lemme know please..thanks

^After reading this, I don't think you understand what a synchro does...

Synchros help the input shaft match the correct rpm to properly engage or 'mesh' the gear you're shifting to. The only time synchros are functioning is durning shifting. The synchros do nothing while in gear.

Splater 09-08-2010 03:02 PM

o, well b4 i look into replacing those maybe i should adjust my clutch? maybe when i put in the clutch its not disengaging fully? bc when i bought the car the guy just had the tranny completley rebuilt it had less then 20 000 on it when i bought it ( i have the recipt for proof) so i dont think the synchros would go that quick. the guy that had the car b4 me just drove it to work and back so its not like he was hard on it either. ill try adjusting the clutch and see what happens i guess

Datenshi 09-08-2010 03:03 PM

I think it's worn syncros too, you should probably replace fluids like everyone else said. lol

Splater 09-08-2010 03:05 PM

ok

redteggy 09-08-2010 03:23 PM

yeah use the syncromesh stuff man. i had a grind in 3-4 and sometimes 2-3, after i changed the tranny fluid, NOTHING, doesnt grind and it feels new again, that stuff is awesome.

Splater 09-08-2010 04:25 PM

k so wats the name of this fluid so i can go and pick some up. just sycromesh tranny fluid or is there a certain brand i should buy

D.T.P 09-09-2010 08:02 AM

Wow...lots of fail in here.

As mike stated, synchros allow the two gear sets to mesh. Now the fact that its grinding is usually caused by the synchros. The transmission fluid you should use is honda mtf or the GM synchromesh. So you go to gm dealership/parts department and ask for it. You will need 1.7-1.8L so 2L will be enough.

The reason it pops out of gear could be as simple as the shifter being too stiff or during rebuild, something went south and even though it does shift into 4th, it may not be fully in. Remember that gears aren't straight and under load they may disengage. Your clutch has nothing to do with this. Is it da or dc? Da integras have cable operated clutch which is adjustable, where as dc integras use hydraulic operated clutches, which aren't really adjustable, unless you adjust the actual pedal (which you shouldn't do).

MPR 09-09-2010 11:17 AM

And unless your clutch pedal has a huge amount of play (I'm talking zero resistance for 1-2"+ of pedal travel) when you press it before you feel resistance, there is no need to adjust the pedal. There is no adjustment for the clutch itself or the shifter linkage.

The popping out of gear issue could also be a problem with the detent mechanism (helps keep the trans 'in gear' and gives the 'notch' feeling when you shift into a gear), which is within the trans and can only be accessed by taking the trans appart...

Which one is better the honda stuff or the gm stuff?

Buff4Prez Yo 10-03-2010 01:50 PM

GM or Amsoil.

HONDA MTF :yeah:

Splater 10-07-2010 05:05 PM

ok so i changed the tranny fluid to some of the syncromesh stuff from GM. I was driving the car today and everything was fine no grinds it didnt pop out or anything. I drove around for about 25 mins and on my way home it poped out of 4th gear. I put the clutch in and tryed puttin it back in but it popped out again. So I put it in 3rd and i could feel a vibrating in the gear shift. then if I want over 55 in 3rd it would start to grind really bad. Im not sure what to do. It seems when it heats up it starts screwing up. Any suggestions of what to do?

teggboi 10-07-2010 05:27 PM

if you feel play in the clutch pedal, then you need a new clutch man. When it starts to go, you cant put it into gears and all that ---- happens.

Buff4Prez Yo 10-07-2010 05:29 PM

sounds like your tranny is on it's way out.

Splater 10-07-2010 05:58 PM

ok so i took it for another drive, and first and second gear are fine. 4th is the problem gear. I can get into 4th if im going slow but as soon as I speed up it kicks it out of gear. Would it still be the clutch even though 1st and 2nd are fine?

teggboi 10-07-2010 06:09 PM

prolly tranny is taking a ----. More reasonable.

Splater 10-07-2010 07:56 PM

ya ive called around and everyone is saying syncros. Now this is my only thought. If it is syncros why is it fine when its cold, if it was worn syncros it would grind and pop out if it was cold or hot right? I have AC Delco Syncromesh but what if when I drive it for a while the fluid heats up and thins it out and then it doesnt cause enough friction for the syncros so it grinds. Im gonna call honda tommorow and maybe I should buy some Honda MTF with the friction modifier. I could be right but I could be wrong I just dont wanna drop the tranny and replace the syncros when it could have been a 20$ fluid change.

Splater 10-07-2010 08:02 PM

ok so i was looking at the tranny fluid i have in there and it only says syncromesh fluid, it has no friction modifier in it thats probably what it is, ill try that tommorow and have an update. Thanks For The Help Guys!

Buff4Prez Yo 10-08-2010 03:47 AM

your 4th gear is fucked. you clutch and your synchros are only used when youre actually putting it in to gear. if it's already in gear and it pops out, it's the gear. get a new tranny.

Vince 10-08-2010 08:16 AM

*cough cough lsd cough*

MPR 10-08-2010 09:26 AM

So it's only 4th that is causing you problems, right? It's most likely your synchro or the 4th gear set itself. Either way, you'll need to have it rebuilt (replace that gear set and synchro) or get another transmission.

Also, USE HONDA MTF DAMN IT!!!! lol.

Splater 10-08-2010 05:39 PM

ya i just put in some Honda MTF today but it changed nothing

MPR 10-10-2010 02:02 PM

^Well, if the damage has already been done, then changing the fluid won't help much.

Splater 10-10-2010 02:50 PM

ya im gettin someone to check it out this week

ac_2007 10-13-2010 03:46 PM

change the transmission fluid. my beamer had the same issue.

acurateggy 02-03-2011 06:58 PM

so stupid. my 93 prelude did the same thing bad grind in 3rd and slight grind in 4th. never popped out though. but what splater says about the fact there is no grinding in mornings when the engine is cold happened to my prelude EXACTLY. the only way to prevent it from getting worse, i found was to super slowly shift into third, like im talking slow. and then same with 4th and then its smooth sailing. nothing else you could really do other than replacing the synchros. the clutch has NOTHING to do with this scenario. so i just put a rebuilt tranny for 500$ in it lol

Gatchan 02-14-2011 05:34 PM

Sounds like a bent shifter fork, but i cant imagine that would cause popping out while cruising around in gear though.

Try double clutching into 4th and hope your synchro isnt totally shot.
