FML, annoying noise

god damn iv had enough of this, sometimes when i start my car it makes this really loud squealing noise, it almost seems like it does it more often now, maybe 3 times a week? :S minds you i start my car alot, theres a belt on the right hand side that it sounds like it comes from, it does it for a few seconds then stops :S could it be from water getting on it?? theres no cover or anything stoping stuff from spashing onto it, i duno if theres sopose to be a cover or not? :S anyone know what it is or how i can stop this annoying noise?

same noise with my parents MDX. It sounds like the alternator

my alternator is brand new tho :S i got a new rad...ever sence then this noise comes and goes?

Im sure scrider or XNIX will know. I dont know the name of it, but it might be the piece that your timing beld attatches to at the bottom. its not attatched to your engine. its attatched in the engine bay

on my DC, my springs squeek all the time because of the winter and i get the same noise from the same area as you are. It might be the winter. if you just got a new alternator, i think your fine.

its moisture on your belts. could be your ac belt it you have it, or possible the ps belt, or even the alt. belt. if it goes away in a few seconds, its just the cold and moisture on the belt. it happened to me and my moms car when i wahsed down the motor. it will do that. do you have all your slash guards underneath attached? like the one in the drivers side fender, or the ones underneath. that will allow snow to get in there and cause that.

if it only happens at start up, i can almost guarentee its that. dont worry about it, but have a look at the belts for cracks or even that kinda dull old rubber look when it fades. belts are easy to replace and there cheap if you need to. the cold also messes with old belts, the variation from cold to hot cause weather cracking and its just from age. just a thought if your confortable checking it out.

100000% a belt no chance about it. dont worry. if anyhting check the tenson of your belt and the condition of them other wise dont worry about it at all. but 100% belt noise. nothing major just annoying as ----.

ya i dont have any kind of spalsh gaurds underneath, the guy swapped out the old engine and put in this one, took out all the A\C and power stearing aswell.
i figured it was the belts but i checked them today and they looked like they were pretty good, ill give them alot look over tomorrow, maybe clean them or something, thanks alot guys.

My timing belt was really loose on my da. Then it just snapped.

edit- you can buy splash guards anywhere. junk yard. they help a lot.

timing belt wont make that noise tho... and yea its your alt belt then. and the condition is just a check up thing. its cus you have no splash guards so you just get some water in there. once it goes for a lil (the 3 secs you say) it disapates the moisture. dont worry about it, its just a bit a bitch.

BUT DONT TRY AND CLEAN THEM! you may ---- it up more lol, make sure if you do you use a rubber friendly, non lubricating cleaner that wont screw with the belt... be careful

ya i was just gona use a dry shammy and rub it real good to get oil or what not off of it from the road.

oil wont make it squeek. think of wet shoes on a floor squeaking. just maybe invest in some junk yard splash guards, or just live with it.

The belts are not tight enuff like they need to be, or the belts are old and cracking.

^ I second that. Had the same problem on my mom's car, got them adjusted PROPERLY, and problem was solved. Never happened again.

God damnit, ok i opened my hood yesterday to work out the wiring with my tach and when i started my car i noticed this noise now -_- i turned it off and on a couple of time and it would only do this maybe every 3rd or 4th time i started the car, i never noticed it b4 :S

your timing belt is fucked... thats your belt hitting the timing cover. its probably your tensoner. mine sounded like that when my tensoner broke. go get that checked asap.

I wouldnt reccomend driving the car. If your timing belt snaps while the gears are moving. Not very good at all...

it wont snap, mine didnt... the tensoner went and it skipped a tooth on the exhaust side.... but starting you car puts the MOST stress on you timing belt. so starting it a whole bunch of times isnt a good a idea. take it to a shop, and get it fixed.

Yeah that sounds like a belt hitting the timing cover, it looks like the cover has moved out and is hitting the crank now, differently get it looked at.

depends. a new timing belt and tensoner and water pump plus labour could run you anywhere between 400-800. depends on there labour chanrge and what parts you get.

i noticed if i hit a bump the noise will go away, untill i hit another one then sometimes it comes back, i havent gotten around to getting it looked at, but do you think it could just be hitting off something easy to fix? or do you guys think its a real problem?

its a real problem dude. your timing belt should be tight. get it looked at before something bad happens. no offense but its kinda wreckless and silly to drive around and not care.

This guy in niagara will get your timing belt changed. he is a mechanic for hydro1, and also works outta his complete fully stocked mechanic shop in his garage. He orders parts at cost and gives them to you at cost. and charges 20$ an hour.

seriously? lol i just recently got laid off so cant really dish out 800 bucks for a shop to take their sweet ass time to fix it and waist their time looking at something else witch seems to always happen, if you can give me his info that would be great!

Im going to his house today to pickup a rad and some hoses. He sells me parts at his cost:D.

it possibly could be 800 if you get a new tensioner and water pump. i did mine my self with everything new and it ran me 250 at my cost, and i did labour myself. a shop could charge you 3 or 4 hours labour and at roughly 85 an hours, it'll add up.

he just needs a timing belt though.

yea but if your in there alrieady and taken it apart, why not do the water pump? would you want to 20000km down the road pay for it all over again to take it apart for a water pump? ---- it.
plus the tensoner is really important. thats why his is rattling cus the tension on his timing belt is too lose. obviously his tensioner is not in working order aka its fucked. this happened to me when my timing skipped. my belt was ok but the owner before me cheaped out like this and just did the belt. then the tensioner screwed me over. you can get a timing belt kit that has both the timing belt and tensioner for like 140 or something, mine was 118 for me from partsource, but at my tech price, so i unno what it would be exactly.

paying for the waterpump latter on if i have to isnt a problem, i just need my car in running order so i can find a job again and get some money

It may not be, but you will paying for a timing belt job again, as you need to remove the belt to do the water pump. so your be paying labor again on something you just had done. It's cheaper in the long run to just do it now with the timing belt.

I could probably do it myself, just its too cold out and snow on the ground to do it
