failed etest hlp

I did an etest over the weekend and my car failed horribly, only on idle. the HC limit is 200 car was at 444 and the CO limit is 1 and car is at 1.09 . what could be the cause of this ? the cat ?

gottalovetheteg 10-18-2010 08:46 AM

How many KMs on the car/cat?

MPR 10-18-2010 09:29 AM

Clean out your IACV, retard the timing as far as it will go (turn the dizzy back) and manually bump the idle up to 1000rpm and I bet it will pass. (can put everything back to normal after the test. It won't hurt the motor, it'll just be really gutless...lol)

Exact same thing happened with my car and that is what made it pass.

Good luck. :)

And oh yeah, is the CEL on?

93tegralsv 10-18-2010 09:34 AM

411k, burns no oil. could it be the cat? thought the cat only affected the nox reading . cuz last summer it blew out through the tail pipe saw a bunch of metal flakes behind my car all over the ground. or would it be something else . the check engine light isn't on

D.T.P 10-18-2010 11:27 AM

Cat affects everything.

Do what mike said to do, if you fail, change the cat

gottalovetheteg 10-18-2010 01:16 PM

Lol holy crap, usually people replace their cats every like 100-200K I'd change it, it's a cheap fix

93tegralsv 10-18-2010 01:21 PM

the car has 411k, , cat's like 80k, ill just change it . found 1 for 80 @ Jdm addiction .

gottalovetheteg 10-18-2010 01:30 PM

oh well that's really not too bad, what are your o2 sensors like?

AcuratePaul 10-18-2010 02:05 PM

Pay under the table......

93tegralsv 10-18-2010 02:38 PM

unless u guys know ppl for etest pm me

mike1787 10-18-2010 07:29 PM

hows the spark plugs/ air filter and injectors seems to be to much fuel going in leaking injector(s) or shotty plugs not fireing good or air filter pluged. going by those hc numbers and co

Spydersniper9 10-18-2010 07:36 PM

i do etests and most likely a new cat will help the HC's as for the CO you'd have to get a diagnostic tester to see the reading of the o2 sensor to be sure if its an o2 sensor

93tegralsv 10-19-2010 08:41 AM

wouldn't the be a check engine light on if O2 was faulty ?

Spydersniper9 10-19-2010 01:06 PM

Only if it fails completely or stops communicating with the computer.

MPR 10-19-2010 01:50 PM

Ok, wow... to the OP: You failed HC at idle and CO by only .09... Retarding the timing will significantly reduce the HC and will also reduce the CO.

All you need to do is retard the timing and bump the idle up to 1000 and it should pass.

I went though this exact thing with mine and it failed worse then yours.

It is possible for the O2 sensor to be "slow" but not off enough to cause the CEL to come on.

But you shouldn't have to change anything. Just try what I said.

Spydersniper9 10-19-2010 03:45 PM

Is your car lowered if not you still have to worry about nox if it is lowered retard the time and take it to an above ground dyno facility because they'll do a two speed idle test (TSI) as the car cant get on the dyno without being damaged and you can't measure nox in a TSI. If you take it to an inground dyno you gotta atleast change the cat and always make sure you get the cat hot. How soon do you need the etest to pass?

PM Nizmo and ask him :yeah:

if he can't hook you up give me a shout :)

MPR 10-19-2010 09:14 PM

Guy doesn't have to replace any parts or spend any more money except on another etest. Just turn the dizzy back and bump the idle up.

AcuratePaul 10-19-2010 09:34 PM

Ya he she def try that first thou ^^^ but I'm just saying what if it doesn't pass he spent another 37$ bucks when for like 70$ he can pass for sure...

Spydersniper9 10-19-2010 10:14 PM

Still he's gotta make sure that cat is hot cause if it isn't the hcs will be through the roof. I'll hook you up with a two speed idle if it's lowered

93tegralsv 10-20-2010 11:45 AM

the front is lower and CT did a 2speed cuz car would practically sit on oil pan . need test done by 28th this month .

93tegralsv 10-22-2010 12:38 PM

an epic fail once again , set timing back and it did worse than my first 2 runs went from 444 HC to 203 ( after changing cat) then back up to 454 after setting the timing back . wuts next

nizmo 10-22-2010 02:48 PM

u sure u didnt advance the timing?

93tegralsv 10-22-2010 03:19 PM

positive , turned it towards the intake side

MPR 10-22-2010 05:00 PM

Towards the intake ADVANCES the timing. Towards the exhaust RETARDS the timing. ;)

93tegralsv 10-25-2010 07:31 AM

did my etest saturday and finally passed , just added the guaranteed to pass stuff , drove around all night friday . and passed with 59 HC and .38 co
