Engine problems

I have a 95 GSR and last night after driving on the highway the car starts to sputter. I'm lagging power and there is no check engine light. Right now the car sounds like a WRX and is causing vibrations in the car. Anyone have an idea to what it is?

zman 12-13-2008 06:35 PM

you're probably running on 3 (or less) cylinders.

It could be a dizzy (spark) problem or a fuel related problem.

Start by checking for spark in all 4 cylinders

ya sounds like a missfire to me

thanks for the tips...going to have to check it on Mon...i hope thats what it is

so here's the deal...no compression on cylinder 1.....any ideas to what to do?

DOHCnoTEC 12-14-2008 10:52 PM

fix it is a start. well a finish too. ha kill 2 birds with one stone!:yeah:

LOL...i know that...whats the cheapest solution till i get a new motor??...i won't be getting 1 till at least the new year

sikkkkktegra 12-15-2008 12:22 AM

what i would do is rip apart the motor and if the pistons/block is the problem id just replace the block. gsr block in good working order around 500 bucks.

black_ac_gsr 12-15-2008 03:26 AM

did you do a leakdown test? you can pin-point weather it's cylinder head or bottom end. If you need any gsr internals let me know mines fully built and i still have mint pistons, rods, recut valves, springs, cams, and retainers.

topsecret 12-15-2008 12:03 PM

i want to rebuild the motor to stock performance. im not going to be ripping the car. I did a test, not sure if it was a leak test. Sprayed some stuff around the head ad header to see if there was any leak and there wasn't.

zman 12-15-2008 12:46 PM

A leakdown test is where you put a cylinder at Top Dead Center (tdc) and fill the combustion chamber with compressed air. This is so you can measure how much air is leaking out and will help determine where the problem lays....hence a leakdown test.

i had the same symptoms you do. i ended up replacing the motor but the cause of it was a chipped valve.

do the leak down test and find out where the air is coming from.

Intake manifold = intake valve
exhaust port or header = exhaust valve

the cheapest solution would be find a GOOD used motor for your car(prefferably one where you can have someone vouch for the motor) can usually find a used stock motor for cheap.

better then replacing stuff and finding other problems.even if you pin point the problem if your not mechanically inclined like that you will get other problems and or have to pay someone else to do it.

IMO find a stock motor swap it in and call it a day.

yeah im looking for a stock motor now...thanks for all the tips

unless the plug is missing, i don't think changing all that is gonna get compression back in cyl #1

black_ac_gsr 12-17-2008 06:44 PM

ive said it b4 and i,ll say it again LEAKDOWN TEST will tell where you are losing the compression intake, exhaust valves, headgasket, or rings.
